Artist in lockdown L ocal artist Allie Pottinger runs Watercolour Workshops from her Swettenham studio and at Gather beside the Town Hall in Congleton Lockdown has changed all of this Her first online class happened by accident Early on in lockdown a regular client contacted me to see if could give a virtual demonstration to her Wilmslow WI group I had only just heard about Zoom but quickly agreed and set about coming to terms with the online platform to see how I could make it work from my kitchen table I bought a clamp to let me position the camera at the best angle I changed the lights and started to test the set up on the rest of the family sitting in different rooms in the house I had to be able to let the group see the artwork but also to see my palette and to hear me clearly The event went well but from what I had thought would be the local 6 Wilmslow group turned out to be the whole Cheshire Federation of the WI There were 78 people in the virtual room all painting along with me It gave me the confidence to know that during lockdown I could still reach my clients and to offer them support for their art even though we could not be together I realised how important it was to stay in touch with my clients Watercolours have a wonderful effect on your mood you quite easily pass the time and get lost in the moment The act of starting and creating a painting can help with giving both escapism and purpose This has helped some Wincle Bluebell Woods Zoom Class in May
of my clients with managing the mental challenges of isolation I have been very conscious communicating with my clients regularly to give advice on their projects and running short classes on line I have also taken the opportunity to revamp my web page This Summer I am in an artists article edit in House Garden for my house and dog portraits and I knew that I had to have a good reference point for anyone interested in my style This precious time has helped me concentrate on the back end stuff of my business I have now a mailing list and my students are all in a database rather than my handwritten cards in my address box They still love a hand painted postcard with seasonal flowers I find I am constantly trying to think of ways to brighten up the days Experience from lockdown for me is that aside from kindness you step out of your comfort zone and look at new ways to learn or you just stay still Despite sharing the kitchen table with your son s home schooling daughters new baking experiment and my painting commissions we manage most days to get purpose and routine I am thankful for our little garden for pleasing nurturing jobs like thinning out the radishes in our veg plot If you would like to try watercolour painting why not join one of Allie s Zoom demonstrations July is colourful Summer Blooms on Thursday 9th July at 2pm or Beginners Summer Landscape Thursday 6th August 2pm Paint along or just watch There are also some free short videos on Allies Facebook page For more information email alison alliepottinger com or visit www alliepottinger com Allie Pottinger 7

Unity in the community H ow are you all doing What an incredibly strange three months it has been and who d have thought we d ever see ourselves in a situation like it Back in March when the lockdown was announced we all found ourselves thrown into an unprecedented time which brought great uncertainty Those classed as vulnerable or showing signs of the virus had to self isolate businesses unless classed as essential had to close social distancing was introduced a term I m sure we ll never forget and we had to isolate ourselves from family friends and colleagues Lockdown has affected each and every one of us Our experiences our views and opinions have divided but also united And this is what I d like this article to focus on COMMUNITY I have been overwhelmed by the inspirational stories that have emerged during lockdown and the amazing community spirit wonderful people from all walks of life who have gone above and beyond They placed themselves at risk in order to help others and didn t give it a second thought Doctors nurses teachers shop workers carers childminders kind friends post men women delivery drivers the list goes on Selfless acts of kindness These people are a shining example to us all My business Bare Health is located right in the heart of Congleton Town Centre I was so fortunate that we were classed as an essential retailer due to the food items we stock in store and the supplements we sell that individuals rely on for their health needs I will be eternally grateful that we could remain open What has kept us here has been our ability to adapt and the support from our customers You chose to continue to shop local In fact the support has been overwhelming It is you lovely people that keep small independent family businesses going We rely on you I am not alone As lockdown progressed I saw other local traders adapt their businesses and start to offer home deliveries or click and collect services Brilliant Crema Gather Wild Wild Beartown Brewery Glebe Farm Congleton Kitchen Handy Cabin Reubens to name just a few And then the local services offering zoom exercise sessions to your home The Yoga Tree and Barre Sculpt striving to keep us all fit and healthy We have so much to be proud of in Congleton and its surrounding areas Like my own these businesses have continued with your support Fast forward to now and finally lockdown restrictions are starting to ease gradually I am thrilled that Congleton Town Centre is RESUMING FOR BUSINESS Not all traders are able to open we are all still eagerly awaiting to have our overgrown locks tended to our therapists to return to soothe our aches and pains and our wonderful eateries to re open But it is a start We are moving forward Now is a crucial time for High Streets across the UK and right now passionate traders from Congleton are working together to ensure our town centre comes back stronger There are exciting ideas coming together which will take a little time to implement but positive change is coming and we are working hard to tackle the issues and challenges What is blindingly clear is that YOUR HIGH STREET NEEDS YOU So with this in mind we urge you to continue to SHOP LOCAL make use of the wonderful businesses in your local area Let s support our local economy and help it to thrive once again Yes there are temporary challenges due to the introduction of parking traffic restrictions that are being implemented but we can work around this As lockdown has shown us we are resilient and can adapt I can assure you your traders will adapt to ensure you can access their services Be sure to check out the brand new Congleton Collective Instagram page and find out about the wonderful traders on your High Street search for congleton_collective And as we start to emerge from our isolation please do keep yourselves as healthy as possible Support your immunity eat well and continue to get outdoors for exercise Bare Health Health Store Holistic Treatment Centre

Passwords T hey are the bane of everyone s life yet they are essential for our security and safety Passwords have plagued the world for decades but with seemingly every website we use and every device we own requiring one remembering them all has now become impossible That in itself has become a security issue because we are tempted to use simple easy to remember passwords or re use the same one in multiple places leaving us very vulnerable if one should be compromised I will look at security in general in a future article but today let s just relieve that burden How to choose a safe password Modern computers can check about 7 billion passwords every second If your password consists of 8 lower case letters a hacker could try every single possibility in half a minute Not much security at all With 14 letters it s around 290 years But include a mix of upper and lower case letters digits and symbols about 92 characters that can be easily reached on your keyboard then an 8 character password gives 23 million year s worth give or take a century or two So always have at least one character from each of those four groups The ideal password is completely random like w 1EU7Poi r which is too 20 hard to remember but choose something like Orange1 and a hacker could break it in seconds They use a dictionary attack trying each of the 60 000 or so commonly used English words plus place and personal names Even if we mix it up a bit hackers know all about substituting 4 for A 1 for I or L zero for O etc you can still zip through the possibilities in thousandths of a second It is clear that using a real word or name is a fatal error The answer The solution to all this is to use a password manager This is a program that integrates into your Internet browser and both remembers and generates long random passwords for you so you never have to enter them again Most of these programs will also synchronise them between your computers and other devices like phones The passwords are safely encrypted using a key only you know that is the only password you will ever need to remember And how do you do that Write it down Keep it separate from your computer and of course write neatly remembering that capital lower case letters are significant More information can be found on my website at www goggleboxtech uk blog Andrew GoggleboxTech

Immune system K eep your immune system strong to beat Covid 19 These are unprecedented times The whole world is fighting the new Coronavirus pandemic and here in the UK we must heed the advice on how to guard against infection Our first line of defence is social distancing self isolation and strict hygiene regimes Our second shield comes from our amazing immune system a network of organs tissues and cells which mobilise to repel invaders or antigens So what can we do to ensure that our immune response is as strong as it can be should it need to battle Covid 19 1 A good diet including plenty of fruit and vegetables is essential to ensure the correct amounts of vitamins and minerals which support and strengthen the immune system 2 Daily exercise keeps our circulation healthy and helps to reduce stress Sports or jogging are great but you could go for a walk in the sunshine take the stairs more often or even do some vigorous vacuuming 3 Reduce stress The stress hormone corticosteroid suppresses the effectiveness of the immune system by decreasing the white blood cells that help fight off infection Make a conscious effort to relax Creative activities yoga mindfulness fishing reading 22 The secret is to make time for yourself 4 Get enough sleep by aiming for around 8 hours a night Cytokines a protein that targets infection are produced and released during sleep Your immune system needs you to get enough sleep for it to function optimally 5 Drink plenty of water Water is the elixir of life flushing out toxins and waste transporting oxygen and helping to produce lymph and digest food It keeps our immune system working at its best How reflexology can help to strengthen our immune system Reflexology induces relaxation reducing stress aiding wellbeing and better sleep The reflexes of the lymphatic and immune system are mapped on the feet hands and ears and are included in all my treatment plans Applying pressure and incorporating other techniques brings balance and homeostasis to the body helps to eliminate toxins and release trapped energy As the virus creeps ever nearer we can take positive steps to ensure our immune system is in peak condition should it be called upon to protect us Keep safe and well Jan Johnson Clinical Reflexologist

Let s talk legal V aluing assets in divorce proceedings has always been an art not a science but the impact of Covid 19 has introduced a whole new aspect to valuations in divorce financial settlements In such turbulent financial times separating couples question how divorce solicitors can value assets given the uncertainty about the housing market the impact of lockdown on family businesses and recent falls in the stock market Experienced solicitors reflect back to their experiences during the 2007 global financial crisis When it comes to valuing assets divorce solicitors rely on expert opinion whether it is A surveyor to value the family home a buy to let portfolio or commercial property owned as part of the family business or within a pension structure An accountant valuing non listed shares or the family business A pension actuary to value a pension Whilst there are many Covid 19 related uncertainties and challenges ahead of us a specialist divorce solicitor can guide you on The timing of obtaining asset valuations and advising if earlier valuations should be updated The importance of financial advice from checking your mortgage capacity to the size of deposit needed for a house purchase or getting revised pension projections for a private pension 24 scheme Whether it is best to share financial risks by dividing each type of asset rather than for example one of you keeping all the cash savings and the other getting the equity in the family home or one of you keeping the family business and the other the pension Whether you should agree to a clean break financial court order preventing future spousal maintenance claims if you are worried about losing your job and getting another one If you should agree to capitalise any spousal maintenance by giving your spouse a cash sum instead of ongoing monthly spousal maintenance payments If you agreed the family home should be sold whether you should ask the court to set the sale price if your husband or wife won t agree to reduce the sale price to reflect the current housing market There is no getting away from the fact that Covid 19 and its financial effects has and will continue to influence almost every aspect of our lives However with expert advice the pandemic and its aftermath should not stop you from moving on with your life notwithstanding the changes brought about by Covid 19 Evolve Family Law

Grandma s Kitchen W ith sunny summer days and more time spent in our gardens it is a perfect time to enjoy afternoon tea with some homemade buttermilk scones We love them with some freshly picked strawberries from our garden Method Heat oven to 220 200 fan gas 7 Line a large baking tray with baking parchment In a mixing bowl add the sifted flour baking powder and salt Add the butter and rub it in with your fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs Stir in the sugar Gently warm the buttermilk and vanilla essence this can be done in the microwave and slowly add to the dry mixture it should be sticky but not wet Leave a small amount of the buttermilk vanilla to one side as this will be used with the splash of milk to brush the scones before baking Turn the mixture out on to a lightly floured surface and flatten out to approximately 3cm Try not to handle the dough too much as it will not rise when baked Use a 5cm or 6cm cutter to stamp out the scones lifting them straight out without twisting them Any remaining dough can be gently shaped and cut until all the dough is used Place the scones on the baking tray leavIng space for them to rise and brush the tops only with the reserved buttermilk milk mixture Bake in the centre of the oven for approximately 1214 minutes until well risen and golden 26 Buttermilk Scones 450g Self rais ing flour 1 4tsp Baking powder 1 4tsp Salt 100g Cold bu tter diced 85g Golden ca ster sugar 284ml Butter milk 2tsp Vanilla es sence Splash of milk Place the scones on a wire rack to cool cover with a clean tea towel to keep them moist Serve cut in half with clotted cream and jam or any other filling of your choice Best served warm and on the day they are baked You can freeze them and once defrosted are delicious warmed up gently in the microwave for approximately 20 seconds

The road less traveled A yres Health are a small podiatry practice run by husband wife team Andrew and Anna Ayres Like many people we have been on quite a journey over the last 3 months Initially closing the clinic to all but emergencies Anna was working for another clinic 2 days a week but sadly this business didn t make it through the lockdown meaning Anna is now with us full time and developing new services We have remained positive and spent the time working on the business putting in place new policy procedures and ensuring we had the clinic ready for re opening During any downtime we enjoyed exploring our local area and now have lots of new dog walks Sadly we had to temporarily postpone our Congleton Walking for Health Group but will re start this as soon as we have the go ahead so keep an eye on our Facebook page During lockdown Andrew has made several webinars on injury rehab and running The webinars include loads of tips and advice from both Andrew and guest speakers These can be accessed through the blog on our 28 website www ayreshealth co uk With the weather being warm recently dry cracked skin can be a problem that left untreated may lead to deep painful fissures Our advice is that prevention is better than cure Gently file the hard skin with a pumice or foot file and get a good quality foot cream and apply this twice daily Creams containing Urea are ideal Urea is a humectant which helps to attract and maintain moisture Our clinic is now back open and we would like to thank patients who have booked appointments with us during this uncertain time A few differences you will notice in clinic include screens between the patient and practitioner and podiatrists in full PPE during the appointment We have extended the appointment times to enable us to thoroughly clean between patients and to allow a more personal service where you will be unlikely to meet another patient on your way in or out It feels good to be back working again and if you have a foot problem we look forward to welcoming you Ayres Health
