Bec in the countryside W hat did you do today Me I arranged a birthday party for a cow There were balloons banners Prosecco and a FABULOUS cake This is just another example of how brilliantly bizarre my life is It began like any normal day a dog walk across the frosty fields breakfast with the team mucking out the horses But this wasn t just any old day this was Queen Barbara s Birthday and it needed to be celebrated in style At 14 years old she s a fine age for a dairy cow The only cow in the herd that comes close is Beverley Moos 9191 She also celebrated a landmark this week she s now produced more than 100 tonnes of milk but at 11 she is a mere whipper snapper compared with Barbs Barbara has managed to get through 14 years of farm life by avoiding people She doesn t like attention so obviously would relish a birthday party Lily J not only runs the dairy she makes spectacular cakes and today s cake was an absolute masterpiece cows udders detachable with the correct black and white markings complete with 14 candles So that s the cake sorted next task decorations Ever tried to decorate a cow shed Nope don t suppose anyone has We even had balloons Lily J took time out from the dairy 14 to help it s remarkable what you can do with sticky tape and twine Ellie was recruited to help and she was tasked with stopping Desmond and Flirty eating the balloons and Birthday Girl banners Decorations in place invitations were sent out to the staff via text Lockdown has been going on for ages now so the prospect of a party with cake and bubbles don t forget was a good one We were all well up for it Barbara was not Initially she was interested to see exactly what these weirdos were doing outside her pen but that quickly passed when we started singing Happy Birthday to Moo Barbara pretty much decided she was out and removed herself to the back of the shed Even Herd Manager Simon couldn t win her over so after cake the party dispersed As quickly as it started It s important that I point out no balloons were eaten by any animals during this party Although Barbara wasn t really feeling her 14th Birthday Party she s a metaphor for so much at Halton Farms She shows how special each cow is and she s the ultimate hard worker She s also super cute even if she doesn t like cuddles Beccy Wood

Man about town G oing Underground You know it s a slow news day when newspapers print front page headlines about house prices or the sad downfall of a minor celebrity I recall a Sunday title splashed on the antics of a little known northern footballer Genuinely I couldn t find anyone who d heard of him That story must have been the journalistic equivalent of Gorgonzola When I worked in local radio a shortage of topical tittle tattle was often signalled by a dog mess debate or health phone in I was always amazed by what some listeners revealed about themselves before an audience in the tens of thousands But there was always a gem or two when we asked what have you found in your garden And so it is with Richard and Alison Stafford from Congleton In their case the answer is truly breathtaking It s a network of subterranean tunnels passages and chambers Richard told me We were having some work done on the house and while we were digging we found a sink hole It turned out to be a tunnel After a lot more digging we found more passageways and a big room Alison and Richard have long suspected a building once stood next to their house But they never thought they d uncover an underground tunnel complex One that must have been built to last There was clearly a service tunnel says Alison There was a 22 stone mullion chute in it and drains Then we discovered a big cavernous room I hope we haven t unearthed a Pandora s Box The Staffords preliminary research suggests they ve discovered the remains of Somerford Hall They understand it was built in 1711 and demolished with dynamite more than a hundred years ago Some of the rooms still contain the debris of the hall s demise But there are plenty of others where the ornate lining of the walls and ceilings have survived intact Richard says It is amazing There are no cracks and you can stand up There s decorative stonework including the use of glazed tiles and Cheshire bricks It looks fantastic Some of the recently exposed walls are four feet thick The Staffords think the underground network allowed servants and staff to traverse the house without embarrassing the gentry and their esteemed guests Alison adds We want to look after it really It s a legacy for the town Richard Stafford s looking forward to becoming an archaeologist It s an opportunity to uncover something from the past We re not just ripping it up We re taking care with it because the brickwork is very ornate and we believe it dates back to the early Eighteenth Century So what s the future for this time tunnel Alison ever the practical one joked she d like more storage for the family But their dreams for this unexpected and exciting addition to their home are much more ambitions She told me Maybe it could be a wine cellar and underground bar Richard metaphorically raised a glass to his wife s proposal The Staffords are a pragmatic pair They know they might need a bottomless pit of money to realise their ambition A lotto win would help quips Richard Can you help Alison and Richard uncover more secrets about their discovery E mail mark edwardson hotmail com Mark Edwardson

Lasting Power of Attorney T he events of the last year has seen many people reviewing arrangements for the future The fast acting nature of the pandemic has meant too many loved ones have become seriously ill and lost capacity to make decisions for themselves We all know we should write a will But too few of us also consider something called Lasting Power of Attorney LPA or that there are in fact two different kinds of LPA that are both necessary We spoke to Gary at Sanctuary Tax and Trust to find out more A Lasting Power of Attorney LPA gives another individual the legal authority to look after specific aspects of your financial affairs or your health and welfare should you lose the capacity to do so Without a Property and financial affairs LPA your financial affairs cannot be dealt with or even accessed until an order has been obtained from the Court of Protection This can take over nine months and is an expensive and time consuming process It would mean no access to your spouse or family member s bank account until this is obtained If you do have an LPA chances are it s the one that deals with your financial affairs A Personal Welfare LPA covers decisions regarding your health and welfare including the medical treatment you d be willing to receive where you d want to be cared for including the 26 choice of care home and crucially whether or not you would want to receive life sustaining treatment Without this decisions would need to be taken by doctors and social services in what they believe to be your best interests Needless to say this may not reflect what you would have chosen for yourself All too often we speak to people who have made a will and simply don t realise this doesn t cover them in the event of an illness or accident that leaves them without mental capacity alive but unable to make decisions for themselves We also speak to people who think they are covered but they only have an LPA that covers their financial affairs not decisions about health and welfare We never know what is around the corner and younger people can also sadly become incapacitated through accident or illness Yet despite this less than 1 of the population have an LPA Lasting Power of Attorney LPA saves a great deal of cost and distress should the unfortunate occur They can be set up relatively cheaply and are recognised by financial institutions care homes and local authorities as well as tax benefits and pension authorities I recommend everyone uses an LPA to plan ahead and ease the possible burden on their loved ones Gary Sanctuary Tax and Trust

Beartown meets Mike Holland I t was a sunny afternoon in March when I stepped into the office of Mike Holland located on West Street on the first floor of one of the grand Edwardian buildings With the sun beaming through the beautiful sash windows I took a seat slipped my shoes off and put my feet up obviously making myself very comfortable for the session ahead Mike would be the perfect person to know if you were moving to a new house and a rubbish cook as he is a trained chef and has a law degree with conveyancing being his speciality He does admit that after university he worked for a local authority using his law degree and very quickly realised it wasn t for him so he moved into hospitality and ran pubs and hotels for a number of years Living in Nottingham at the time he eventually took a job at Boots head office in their Learning and Development department It was there that Mike finally found his calling in life which was to work with people and help them reach their true potential During his 23 years at Boots he worked with the board and their teams on their personal development and implemented improvements by redesigning the way the warehouse staff worked for the betterment of the business as a whole He was able to grow personally too by training in hypnotherapy and NLP neurolinguistic programming and when he was offered redundancy it was the perfect time to branch out on his own This new adventure coincided with the need to move to Congleton to care for his elderly relatives and that s how Mind Being You was born Over the last five years it is fair to say the mindfulness movement has been booming with a wealth of apps books magazines and documentaries on the subject However nothing beats seeing an expert in person so I visited Mike s office to learn how to relax and improve my wellbeing 30 This may be through mindfulness or perhaps using one of Mike s other skills such as hypnotherapy EFT emotional freedom techniques which is a form of counselling intervention that draws on various theories of alternative medicine or NLP neuro linguistic programming a psychological approach that involves analysing strategies So there I was relaxing in the office of Mike s practice Mind Being you on a reclined chair in a lovely airy room at the Congleton Complementary Alternative Medical Centre As my session was about to start I asked Mike about how things have been for him during the year of Covid He said he has had a wide variety of issues presented to him caused by the lockdown and he feels honoured to have helped people through it And his plans for the future Like many he is ready for a holiday to his favourite place Pollenca Mallorca where he can enjoy practising what he teaches Katy

Motoring thought E lectric Vehicles how will the Chancellor Generate the Cash How much will the British motorist be paying from 2021 onwards for the convenience of running a car With the sales of pure electric cars EVs on the increase and rightly so the Chancellor of the Exchequer is apparently pondering where in future the money that is taken annually from vehicle excise duty fuel duty and VAT charged to the petrol and diesel motorist will come from In recent years this income has amounted to some 40 billion At the present time drivers of EVs pay no excise duty or road tax as some of us call it They pay no London congestion charges which at the time of writing are 11 50 per day It is envisaged that other cities will soon apply such charges including Birmingham and Bath at present When you purchase a new EV you are at this time entitled to the Plug in Vehicle Grant of 3000 payable by the taxpayer although of course these vehicles are quite a bit more expensive than the equivalent sized petrol or diesel powered versions However when comparing total costs some EV users are finding them cheaper to run than a similar petrol or diesel model over a reasonable vehicle lifetime with depreciation factored in As a rough guide with the proper equipment installed at home you can fully charge an EV overnight for about 5 50 and dependant on the particular make and model it is possible according to manufacturers figures to travel 200 or more miles on that charge It should be said that driving style weather conditions temperature use of onboard equipment etc will affect the mileage obtained Of course if one does not have private off road parking then it is not possible to use a home charger as dragging a cable across the pavement will be frowned 32 upon by the authorities and just could be considered dangerous This means that more expensive and much less convenient to use public chargers will be the only option As sales of new petrol and diesel cars will be banned from 2030 buyers will be forced to go the EV route unless other so called non polluting vehicles are developed such as hydrogen powered which are currently not actually on sale but could soon be available It must be the case that the government will not wave goodbye to the lucrative amounts currently taken from the motorist as electric propulsion becomes more the norm Therefore quite cunningly they will be looking to make up any shortfall by taking it from the EV motorist at some time soon Apparently a number of different taxation methods are under consideration including increased tax on fuel at the pumps a pay per mile system and alterations to the current excise duty system My opinion is that an interim fudge will be introduced more than likely an increase in fuel duty which will hit the petrol and diesel user but may push more of them into EV ownership and a further fettling of the excise duty method so that it is applied to EV motorists at a low level on introduction The technology for a pay per mile system exists now but will require most vehicles to be modified probably at the owner s expense before it could be fairly introduced and of course to include the EV driver All of the above is put to you as food for thought by your local motoring correspondent

Holistic thinking H OLISTIC a word that is well used We see it as an adjective liberally cast before words such as lifestyle approach view and thinking and especially in relation to complementary therapies It is used to describe what a therapy offers how we approach our treatments and the outcomes that our clients can benefit from As a word holistic is a great all rounder but what does it actually mean Holistic derives from the Greek word Holos meaning whole The dictionary definition is dealing with or treating the whole of something or someone and not just a part In health terms it is the treatment of the whole person The principles of holistic medicine both medical and complementary regard the whole person with the aim of achieving optimum health and wellness by considering body mind emotions spirit and societal influences If one part of us is not working as it should then this causes imbalances to all other parts and negatively affects our overall health My new clients are often surprised at the range of questions I ask at their initial consultation appointment We cover medical history sleep habits diet exercise home and 34 work situation Just as there are many parts that make up a whole person there are also many factors in life that drive our health and wellbeing A client may be seeking reflexology for a specific issue such as the relief of migraines for instance but they are a person not an ailment and are considered holistically by their therapist As a reflexologist I do not aim to diagnose or give medical advice I will listen to and observe my client and correlate the information from the consultation with the story that their feet tell me during their reflexology session With this guidance I create a bespoke treatment plan working together with my client to achieve their aims Holistic means whole but more importantly it means observation listening empathy consideration and reflection We are a fascinating amalgamation of our past and present our nature and nurture whether we are winning at life or not Holism is an ethos to be celebrated giving us liberation from being defined by a medical condition disability social situation or cultural beliefs We are so much more than the sum of our parts Jan Johnson Jan Johnson Reflexology

Play your cards right M ost of us nowadays are familiar with the concept of Reward Cards What you may not know is how rewarding this can be for you and yours and or for your favourite charities should you so choose so long as you play your cards right Loyalty Cards There are of course a whole plethora of Loyalty Reward Cards available to us indeed your purse wallet or pockets may already be stuffed with them I know many people are put off using them because they end up having to carry so many of them around If this is you then you may be better suited downloading the app versions For most of these cards as they say there s an app for that Practically all the Loyalty Cards schemes reward you with points when you buy from certain stores or online You can then use these points towards other purchases there is generally no option to convert your points to cash The level and type of reward of course varies from provider to provider and you usually end up spending quite a lot compared to your reward value Nevertheless if you are going to make those purchases anyway it is certainly worth getting the reward Those points do mount up and can prove to be valuable when you come to spend them The pandemic though has meant that it is more difficult to spend those points especially those being saved towards flights hotels eating out and the like 36 Many loyalty card schemes enable you to donate points that would otherwise go unused to charity Nectar points for example can be donated to Comic Relief and BBC Children in Need with Nectar matching the value of all points donated A new platform called For Good Causes enables people to give their reward points to the charity of their choice Cashback Cards Of course there are also banks financial institutions and many stores who offer rewards when you use certain credit or debit cards Amex in particular seem to offer the best introduction bonuses and ongoing rewards compared to other credit cards currently available Unfortunately though Amex is generally not as widely accepted as Visa or Mastercard credit cards so it helps to think about where you are likely to be able to use it to see if the rewards are right for you There is also a little known Visa reward card available that offers cashback on all purchases up to 7 of spend on physical purchases and even more with some online purchases It isn t a traditional credit card or a debit card so you can t get into any debt it works as a pre paid card so you can only spend what you have on the card Whatever card s you choose it is a lovely feeling to know how much cashback or points you ve earned as you leave the till or make an online purchase All I ask is you use them wisely do you research before you spend and use the right card s to get the very best rewards and remember that you don t want to get into debt just for rewards there s no reward in that So Congleton Consumers Play Your Cards Right Be richly rewarded and help others in the process Thank you for reading it brings me great pleasure to share with my fellow residents how we can all keep and put more money in our household pockets Geoff Gittins Congleton s Consumer Champion
