While St. David's Day marks a notable occasion, there's a plethora of reasons to adore this time of year. With each passing day, the countryside transforms into a canvas of vibrant hues as elds burst into life with golden daodils, their cheerful blooms soaking up the increasingly frequent sunshine. As temperatures rise, the call of the coast becomes irresistible, drawing us towards captivating destinations like Llandudno. There's something magical about strolling along the seaside, breathing in the fresh sea air and basking in the warmth of the sun. Yet, amidst these spontaneous adventures, March also signals the time for meticulously planning visits to my in-laws' charming campsite in Pembrokeshire.Nestled just beyond Haverfordwest, along the picturesque route to Broad Haven, their campsite oers a tranquil retreat amidst rolling elds. A mere twenty-minute walk from South Cockett Caravan and Camping leads to the pristine shores of Broad Haven Beach—a hidden gem that ranks among the most breathtaking in the UK. For avid campers like myself, it's a destination that promises relaxation and rejuvenation. And should you choose to stay, a warm welcome awaits from Val and Jim, who will gladly assist in securing your pitch. In essence, March epitomises the essence of Wales—captivating scenery, heartfelt hospitality, and a profound sense of tranquillity that lingers long after you've bid farewell to its shores. As we embrace the wonders of March, I hope this month brings you abundant joy and memorable experiences, whether you're exploring the countryside, reconnecting with loved ones, or simply enjoying the beauty of the season.Katy x

6The Cafe at Higher Farm on Byley Road, Middlewich. Where you can enjoy a delicious cooked breakfast, while watching horses riding, with a views of the wide open Cheshire countryside.Like most, our Saturday mornings are busy with kids clubs. One is at footy and one is at ballet, so once we were all back home and changed we were all desperate for a yummy lunch. We popped over to The Cafe at Higher Farm after seeing it in @golocalmiddlewich and we are pleased we did. Lunch was so good and so reasonably priced.Even though it was 1pm, I had to have one of their all day cooked breakfasts. I chose the small size, which is still massive by the way. And at just £7.50 its a great price, too.Bacon, sausage, egg, beans, hash brown, mushrooms, plum tomato, baked beans, toast and got to love the black pudding! Yes all that for £7.50 and I couldn’t fault it one bit.Enough about my breakfast. What did the other members of my family order? My husband got the broccoli, stilton & spinach soup with a bread roll. This was presented really nicely, and you could tell it was homemade and just £5.My little girl ordered beans on toast o the children’s menu. The children’s portion is 1 slice of toast for £2.50 which was perfect for her. The adult portion is 2 slices and £3.50 so if your child is a little hungrier this would be a good option. My daughter always likes it when this is an option on a menu.My eldest daughter, who has a good appetite, ordered the pulled pork panini. They had run out of panini bread, so they oered to do it as a toastie, which worked just as well. It was loaded full with pulled pork, bbq sauce, and nacho cheese. She added fries for an extra £2 making her meal £8. It really did look good with plenty of lling. It’s a nice little cafe sat within an award winning horse riding school. There are televisions on the wall showing the indoor horse arena, so if you have a child having lessons ,you can sit in the cafe and watch. We found it interesting to watch and there was more to look at outside too.Two walls of the cafe are completely glass so, it provides great views of the farm land surrounding the riding school. Down the hill you, can see the outside arena with even more lessons happening. I love nding new cafes like this. Supporting independent businesses is so important, especially when they are this good, and the sta were all so friendly. They have a good choice on the menu including some gorgeous looking burgers, jacket potatoes and wraps. I will denitely be back as I’ve been told their Sweet Chilli Chicken Wrap is highly recommended.Top Info: Open 7 days a week, 9am - 5pm. Eat in or take away. All day breakfasts. Lunch. 8In today’s fast-paced world, nding a moment of peace can often feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. The constant barrage of information, deadlines, and societal pressures can lead to an overwhelming sense of anxiety and stress. However, there’s a beacon of hope that promises not just a momentary respite but a lifelong sanctuary of calm and clarity: mindfulness. Through the Mindfulness for Life 8 Week Course with Mike Holland, individuals are oered a gateway to harness this innate capability, transforming their lives from the inside out.So what is Mindfulness? At its core, mindfulness is the art of being fully present and engaged in the moment, without judgment. It’s about acknowledging our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment with an open and accepting attitude. This might sound simple, yet in practice, it requires a conscious eort to break away from the automatic pilot mode that dominates our daily lives. I found mindfulness was not about emptying the mind or achieving a state of eternal bliss; it’s about being aware of the present experience, whatever it may be.Learning to Access Your Inner Zone of Calm. The Mindfulness for Life Course is designed to demystify mindfulness and make it accessible to everyone. It’s based on the understanding that mindfulness isn’t a skill to be acquired but an inherent quality to be nurtured. The course introduced me to various techniques and practices, from meditation to mindful breathing and body scans, all aimed at enhancing my ability to tap into my inner calm. The journey is as much about learning these techniques as it is about integrating mindfulness into every aspect of daily life, from eating and walking to listening and speaking. The benets of a consistent mindfulness practice are backed by a growing body of scientic research. Participants of mindfulness programs often report a signicant reduction in stress and anxiety, as these practices help in modulating the body’s response to stressors. Furthermore, mindfulness cultivates a heightened state of focus and creativity, enabling individuals to engage more deeply with their work, hobbies, and personal projects.Mindfulness also plays a crucial role in enhancing emotional resilience, making it easier to navigate life’s ups and downs with grace and equanimity. By fostering a deeper understanding of one’s own mind and emotions, mindfulness paves the way for improved communication and relationships. It encourages a compassionate and empathetic approach, not just towards oneself but also towards others.Beyond the Individual: A Ripple Eect. The impact of mindfulness extends beyond individual well-being. As people become more mindful, they contribute to creating a more compassionate and aware society. The increase in personal well-being can lead to more positive interactions, reduced conict, and a greater sense of community. Mindfulness, therefore, is not just a personal journey but a collective one that has the potential to transform societies. As Mike said in one of our sessions “In embracing mindfulness, we not only enrich our own lives but also contribute to a kinder, more mindful world.”The Mindfulness for Life 8 Week Course oered me a structured and supportive path to discovering the transformative power of mindfulness. Whether you’re looking to reduce stress, enhance your focus and creativity, or simply nd a deeper sense of peace in your daily life, mindfulness may hold the key. It’s about coming home to yourself and discovering a wellspring of calm and clarity that has always been within you, waiting to be accessed. Mike is running more Mindfulness programs this year from his practice on West Street, to nd out more about the courses, email mike@mindbeingyou.co.uk.Mindfulness, I found calm & claritybyKaty

WILL WRITING • WILL TRUSTS • ASSETS TRUSTPOWER OF ATTORNEY • INHERITANCE TAX PLANNINGTelephone 01270 667 912 or visit www.sanctuarytts.comSanctuary Tax & Trust Services Ltd, 41 Lawton Road, Alsager ST7 2AAAs the cost-of-living spirals and more of our children struggle to get a footing on the property ladder it is now more important than ever to plan our family’s inheritance. The team at Sanctuary Tax & Trust explain how many families nd themselves victims of avoidable losses and why simply writing a will does not guarantee our family will inherit as we wish. For the vast majority of people, we spend all our lives working to build up wealth, through property, savings and pensions we look at providing nancial security for our families and when our nal day arrives, we hope these assets will pass to the people we care about the most, partners, children, relatives and friends. Traditionally, people have chosen wills to document their wishes and while writing a will is important, it does not provide any protection for the assets within it.Considerations when planning InheritanceCare Fees – As we live longer the likelihood of needing care becomes greater and under the government’s changes to the social care act should the need for care arise, we could see our asset taken down to just £14,250. The new assessment process will see everybody with property and savings over a combined value of £23,250 being required to pay for their care.Relationship Failure – When passing assets purely through a will we see many leaving their assets to their children but not giving consideration to what would happen if one of their children was to divorce. This can lead to a child seeing half of their inheritance in the hands of an ex-partner and in the event of early bereavement this can lead to grandchildren being disinherited.Inheritance Tax – The current IHT framework can be complex and unknowingly people can leave their children and even grandchildren with an Inheritance tax issue.Probate – The cost of probate has risen dramatically over the last few years, and it can be a lengthy and drawn-out process. On average, with a valid Will, probate will typically take 6 – 12 months to complete, without a Will it may take up to 2 years. It’s Never the Wrong Time To Do The Right Thing – While people appreciate that inheritance planning is important many will delay seeking the correct advice. By putting o arranging our aairs we run the risk of running out of time, or in the event of illness, seeing our options dramatically reduced. Why Sanctuary Tax & Trust Services? With over 20 years of experience in Estate and Inheritance planning we have helped families in the area protect their assets and plan their inheritance in the most cost-eective way. While the individual family’s circumstance may vary, the one constant is that each family aims to provide the maximum amount of inheritance possible without the stress of complex legal jargon.

12Ah, the loft – a space often overlooked, yet bursting with untapped potential. If you’re like many homeowners, your loft might be harbouring a treasure trove of belongings, waiting to be sorted and organised. But fear not! With a little guidance, you can transform your loft into a well-organised storage haven. Let’s embark on this journey together.Step 1: Start with a Clear-Out The rst step in reclaiming your loft is to declutter. Take a moment to assess what you have stored away and consider parting ways with items you no longer need. Whether it’s old clothes, unused furniture, or forgotten knick-knacks, a clear-out will help create space for the things that truly matter.Step 2: Check for Unwanted Guests Before diving into storage, it’s essential to ensure your loft is pest-free. Take a quick peek to check for any unwelcome visitors, such as rodents or insects. Addressing any pest issues upfront will safeguard your belongings and ensure a clean storage environment.Step 3: Assess Available Space Unlocking a hidden storage spaceby Alan, Access4LoftsNext, evaluate the space in your loft to determine your storage capacity. Make sure there’s enough room to move around safely when storing or retrieving items. By maximizing your loft’s space, you’ll make the most of every square inch and avoid cluttered chaos.Step 4: Choose Suitable Storage ContainersWhen it comes to storage containers, opt for sturdy options like cardboard boxes. These will provide better protection for your belongings compared to imsy bin liners. Plus, they’ll help keep your items organised and easily accessible.Step 5: Plan Where to Store Items Consider where each item will go once you’ve decluttered and sorted your belongings. Having a storage plan in place will prevent clutter from spilling into other areas of your home and ensure everything has its designated spot.Step 6: Label Your Storage BoxesLast but not least, label each storage box clearly on both sides. This simple step will make it easy to nd what you need when you need it, saving you time and frustration during future searches. Why a Loft Ladder is EssentialWhen it comes to accessing your loft for storage or any other purpose, a loft ladder is indispensable. Installing a loft ladder provides safe and convenient access to your loft space, making it easier to retrieve items and perform tasks. Whether you’re organising storage, conducting maintenance, or simply exploring your loft’s potential, a sturdy loft ladder ensures easy and ecient access, adding functionality and practicality to your home.By following these steps and incorporating a reliable loft ladder into your loft organisation plan, you’ll not only free up valuable space in your home but also create a more organised and functional living environment. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s roll up our sleeves and embark on the journey to a well-organised loft!

14Here’s a question. Where can you see many of the world’s modern wonders all in the same place? And when I say “wonders” I mean buildings including the Taj Mahal, the Eiel Tower and the Coliseum. The answer isn’t the glittering strip of Las Vegas nor the wildest of AI creations. To be absolutely accurate it’s Jo Jeries’ new home in Congleton. As youngsters many of us spent hours creating worlds of wonder and excitement in Lego. I used to build housing estates, eets of ships and futuristic cities out of a myriad of multi-coloured bricks. I loved Lego but as I grew up my head was turned by Mr Atari and his Space Invaders. However, Jo’s Lego love aair is for life.Sat in the shadow of an imposing Lego Eiel Tower Jo told me, “I was less of a Lego builder as a youngster than I am now. It’s the intricacy and how it’s Man About To wnMark Edwardsondesigned and ts together. I can forget about everything else while I’m doing it. It’s therapeutic.”Naturally, Jo is extremely proud of her work. Her Lego RMS Titanic is exhibited, like many of Jo’s creations, in a bespoke display case. “It’s lovely to see everything come together and create a replica. I’m proud to display them. I don’t feel like I have to excuse the fact I still play with Lego.”The incredibly detailed and subtly crafted model shows the ship as it would have appeared prior to that unfortunate incident o Newfoundland. It’s not just the hull’s curve nor the detailed superstructure Jo’s proud of. She’s invested a lot of time and eort in her model’s intricate interior. It’s an incredibly intimate relationship as Jo explained. “It’s my favourite build because you don’t see the inside of it. But I know what’s in there and nobody’s going to see it unless I take it apart.” I asked whether there’s something private inside the Titanic - perhaps a time capsule? “No”, Jo replied. “But that’s a really good idea.” Happy to help!I know what you’re thinking. Lego’s for kids isn’t it? I put the point to Jo. In response she laughed like a drain. “They’re not for kids’ bedrooms. The Eiel Tower wouldn’t t in either of their bedrooms! It’s a creative eort. It’s something to put yourself into for several weeks and kids don’t have the attention span for that.”Respectfully, Jo is unusual. She’s a public member of an underground network of adults who’re a little bit shy of revealing their love of Lego. The Urban Dictionary describes such people as “Legoists”. Jo’s a pound member of the movement. “I get other people into it. Why not? Spread the joy!”Jo’s smart detached home is bursting with her many Lego creations. So, what’s her plan? “I’m not moving ever.” She vowed. “In fact I’m considering building a full sized Lego house. With everything inside made out of Lego.” Just be careful of those upturned bricks in the shadows of the night!

16Resilience means the capacity to withstand or recover quickly from diculties. It is an important character trait that we all need to employ from time to time. Recent personal events have called into question my own scope of resilience, which led to levels of anxiety and emotional turmoil I found dicult to control. This experience has prompted me to look closer at ‘resilience’ – Why is it so important, how do you build it, and how do you know if you are resilient enough?Resilience is our mental armour protecting us against challenging experiences. It provides the emotional exibility to withstand and adjust to life’s downturns and bounce back stronger as the problem recedes. However, a resilient person may not simply bounce back from a traumatic event. They may not eortlessly recover, but will often be changed by their experience and embark upon a new pathway with changed priorities of life. A person lacking resilience will become overwhelmed by adverse situations or hardships and may turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms. You have only to watch the news to see that life isn’t easy! Some will need to cope with war and famine, while closer to home, there may be illness, nancial instability or bereavement. Resilience appears in three forms:• Emotional – dealing with a crisis through realistic optimism.• Physical – the ability of the body to adapt to changes and challenges of disability.• Community – The response of groups of people to react and recover from natural disasters and violent acts etc.In my work as a reexologist, I have researched the eects of stress upon our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Over time a consistently stressed state has a damaging impact on the body. Having resilience can protect an individual from the ramications of stress, boosting their ability to regain control. Resilience isn’t a single skill but a combination of factors. If you think you are a little low on your reserves of resilience, here are a few recommendations that may help:• Be hopeful – Being open to change makes it easier to adapt when challenged.• Learn from your experiences – Think about what has helped you cope with tough times in the past.• Build your support network – Build strong relationships with family friends and community groups to help guide and support you during bad times.• Don’t ignore problems – Be proactive, set goals and plan your way through setbacks.• Practice self-care – Manage your stress with relaxing activities such as reexology, meditation or yoga. Get plenty of sleep by following calming pre-bedtime rituals. Eat a healthy diet and include some daily physical activity.• Do things that make you happy – A laugh and smile are priceless when facing challenging times.• Get help – When times are tough and you feel you aren’t making progress, you may wish to seek professional help to improve your resilience.I will certainly be including more of these points into my life in the future and hopefully, the next time life throws me a curve ball, I will be much better equipped to catch it!How to Build Your Resilienceby Jan JohnsonReexology

18Elizabeth’s Group is launching its new Elizabeth’s Writers Group at a book launch at Congleton Library on International Women’s Day (March 8th). The book, Still She Rises, is a compilation of short stories and poems written by local people on the theme of women, their lives, and experiences, and what Elizabeth means to them.Elizabeth’s Group began life on International Women’s Day 2018 and has been very successful in raising awareness of Elizabeth Wolstenholme Elmy and her remarkable life and work. Its members raised over £70k in just four years to commission a statue by Elizabeth’s cornerElizabeth’s GroupFind out more at elizabethelmy.comthe renowned sculptor Hazel Reeves, which was unveiled by Baroness Hale of Richmond on International Women’s Day 2022 and now stands proudly on Bridge Street.Writing was very important to Elizabeth who at one point in her life was writing 400 letters a day to correspondents all over the world, from her little house on Buxton Road. She also wrote poetry, books and pamphlets which she kept meticulously in an archive of her work which was housed in two rooms at her home. Sadly, this archive was lost in 1914 when it was taken away on handcarts and recycled for the war-eort, her precious canon disastrously and inexplicably lost forever.Life was a constant battle for Elizabeth who saw her writing and her poetry as her main weapon, using her pen rather than the violence she was so opposed to as a life-long pacist. Building on her legacy, the main aim of Elizabeth’s Writers is to give women and girls a voice and a place to use their creative talents via the medium of the written word. Absolute beginners are welcome as well as established wordsmiths. This is in keeping with Elizabeth’s ethos; she taught and encouraged the working women of Congleton in the 1870s, 80s and 90s at the Coop Hall in Mill Street. The meetings will take place on the rst Wednesday of the month at 7pm, starting on 3rd April, and will initially be online. More details can be found on Elizabeth’s Group Facebook page or on our website www.elizabethelmy.com or by emailing elizabethelmy@gmail.com.The Book Launch Event takes place at 7pm on 8th March at the Library Meeting Room (entrance by the bus station) all are welcome, and we hope to live-stream the event on Facebook for those who can’t make it in person.Still She Rises will be on sale via our Facebook page and our website as well as on the night, and all proceeds will go to the charity to further its work with women and girls. Collagen it seems is hot stu and bang on trend if you are an avid follower of social media and very much in demand. But why has it’s popularity soared? Is it worthy of consideration? Are all collagen products the same and more importantly what are the benets of supplementing collagen? Let’s nd out.Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and vital in providing structure and resilience to our skin, hair, nails, bones, ligaments and tendons – the word itself originates form a Greek word that “kola” means gum and “gen” means producing. It acts like a glue that holds everything together. Unfortunately, as we age our natural collagen production decreases leading to common signs of that dreaded word…’ageing’! Wrinkles, saggy skin, joint pain, brittle nails, thinning hair, gastrointestinal issues all potential indicators of diminishing collagen levels. Joy of joys! It’s not just ageing that can aect our collagen production either. According to Harvard University, collagen production drops most quickly due to excess sun exposure, stress, smoking, excess alcohol, lack of sleep and exercise. So as we get older how can we bolster our dwindling collagen levels and maybe delay some of the unwanted side eects of ageing whilst minimising the impact of the environmental factors? The good news is we can give our collagen production a boost with a view to looking good and feeling good for longer. Sadly, I don’t have the secret of eternal youth or a magic wand, but we can take steps to minimise and delay the signs of and issues associated with ageing. Good nutrition is fundamental and what I consider to be a pillar of optimum health and with that very much in mind our food choices are vital to our body’s collagen production. Bone broth for example is a traditional remedy packed with collagen and a source of essential protein. Fish is also an abundant source, especially the skin oering skin enhancing and joint protection benets. Other ways you can support collagen production is through providing the body with specic nutrients that support its synthesis. Vitamin C found predominantly in citrus fruits, bell peppers, broccoli, sprouts and berries aids in creating and stabilising collagen molecules. Amino acids, the building blocks of protein (and thus collagen) are another essential component and can be provided through consuming lean meats, beans, nuts and dairy further promoting natural collagen formation. Proline, an amino acid abundant in collagen can also be enhanced through consuming proline rich foods such as cabbage, soy, asparagus and egg whites. Garlic may also be of benet too as it contains sulfur which helps synthesize and prevent the breakdown of collagen. Eating a broad spectrum of healthy collagen boosting foods is certainly a benecial approach. However, it is a common misconception that we can get enough collagen from food alone. Especially when you take into consideration food quality, food processing, how ecient your digestive system is, whether you’re an omnivore, vegetarian or vegan and whether you are consuming enough of the right foods to make an impact. How else can we boost our collagen levels other than food? Via collagen supplements and beauty products. However, proceed with caution with the latter and be wary of skincare products claiming to increase collagen levels – be savvy when purchasing these products. Do your research. Look for brands that have carried out independent research to show that the products actually do what they say on the tin so to say. Collagen supplements are widely available as powders and capsules and again quality and strengths vary greatly from brand to brand. There are also dierent types of collagen that have dierent functions within the body. Type I, II and III are the forms often used in supplements and may prove benecial for various health concerns from improving skin hydration and elasticity, to supporting gastrointestinstinal issues, aid injury recovery, support bone and joint health, strengthen hair and nails to improving cardiovascular health. Collagen can be supplemented through various sources which are often animal or marine derived with a plant based alternative for those who are vegetarian or vegan. If you’re unsure of what’s right for you seek advice. Your independent health store, Bare Health will be able to provide guidance and tailor a collagen supplement to meet your needs.Collagen, the glue that binds us togetherby Mel,Bare HealthAlways consult your GP or healthcare professional if on prescribed medication or undergoing any form of medical treatment.

22Nestled in the heart of Congleton lies a treasure trove of history: Salford Mill, an enchanting listed building on Milk Street. Here, amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, I had the pleasure of meeting Janet, the vibrant owner of Jantex, a business that has been a xture in the mill since 1975.Finding Jantex is a straightforward aair: just o Rood Hill, follow Milk Street until you reach the mill, which boasts ample parking—a rarity in town. According to its Wikipedia page, Salford Mill has quite the story to tell. Originally built for silk production by Nathaniel Barton, it later transformed into a fustian mill under Edward Knapper’s ownership. Cameron’s Knitwear Ltd also called it home before relocating to GRANTOWN-ON-SPEY in 1969.But what truly piques curiosity are the mill’s connections to historical gures like suragist Elizabeth Wolstenholme. Owned by her husband, Mr. Elmys, the mill became a platform for unconventional ideas. When Charles Bradshaw and Amie Bessant, leaders Katy meets... Jantexby Katyof the British Atheist Society, were denied a space in the town hall, Mr. Elmys oered them a platform at the mill. This gesture stirred up controversy, leading to protests marked by loud voices and thrown stones—a testament to the clash of ideologies in a changing world.Jantex holds a special place in the heart of Congleton, tracing its roots back to Bernard McDonough, Janet’s father. A seasoned entrepreneur in the textile industry, Bernard had already left his mark with another shop in town, named after his wife, Dorothy. However, the allure of Salford Mill beckoned, oering a larger space to expand his business. Today, three oors of the mill are brimming with a vast array of stock, inviting customers to browse and discover treasures anew.As you step into Jantex, you’re greeted by a wide selection of ooring on the ground oor. From cozy carpets in an array of materials, styles, and colours to sleek wooden and vinyl options, there’s something to suit every taste and space. What sets Jantex apart is their in-house installation team, ensuring a smooth process from start to nish. With samples available for a hands-on experience, customers can envision how the ooring will look and feel in their homes. Jantex also oers a free measuring service and allows customers to borrow samples, making the decision-making process hassle-free.One of the standout features of Jantex is the remarkable team led by Janet. As I stepped into the building, I was warmly greeted by Dave Mould, a stalwart of the company for an impressive 35 years. Starting as a tter, Dave now oversees the retail side of the business, drawing upon decades of experience to provide invaluable advice and guidance to customers. Alongside Dave, Lee Mc Gough serves as the main surveyor and project manager, ensuring smooth operations and awless execution. My husband and I recently dedicated an entire afternoon to perusing the extensive collection, searching for the ideal material to upholster a footstool. Janet and her team embody the spirit of dedication and excellence, ensuring that every customer’s experience is nothing short of exceptional. As we bid farewell to Janet and Jantex, we leave with a newfound appreciation for the intersection of history, craftsmanship, and community, each thread woven seamlessly within the fabric of this extraordinary establishment.

2023 was a whirlwind for BTG. This little charity, founded in Congleton, Cheshire went nationwide with a bang. I feel like I blinked and it happened. When BTG was founded we worked with one counsellor who did a single day per week. I did all the PT sessions out of the CrossFit gym, we paid the counsellor and I did the PT sessions for free because we had no funding. There were times I questioned if I was crazy for doing it. But I realised though that I had to make it work. Because these programs worked. They were saving peoples lives. It felt criminal not to share this with the world, and that’s how we took the next big step. We started working with SWANS CIC who had capacity to support more clients, I began travelling to other gyms locally and found JWC in Sandbach. There I met Heather who now plays a crucial role in the running of BTG. The chicken, the egg & the charity! Vicky,Bridging The Gap Mind MattersBut then it happened, people were hearing about this charity that gave free mental health programs, this charity that would actually take you by the hand and help you. Not fob you o with a leaet or a waitlist. A charity that helped you learn how to live a healthy, happy life. And they came, but the money didn’t. This is always the diculty with running a service like this, it’s the chicken and the egg, what comes rst, we need people to know we exist so we can be considered for fundraisers, donations, grants, sponsorship and any kind of support to keep the programs available, but the more people that know about us, the more people that come. It really is a never ending cycle. With 1 in 10 charities going bankrupt and disappearing, we’ve had to work harder than ever to keep going. It’s been tough, but we’re making it work, with some incredible donations and sponsorships from local business’s and organisations we’ve managed to provide support to over 200 people. There’s too many to list here in my 400 word count but I can say truly, we appreciate every single penny that’s donated at btg-mindmatters.org/corporate-sponsorship.You can’t put a price on someone’s life, but £750 is enough to give us a chance to save one.Take a look at www.BTG-mindmatters.org to complete an application.Do you or someone you know need support with their mental health?

With the approach of spring, thoughts turn to outdoor leisure. In Congleton that probably includes our historic Town Park. Opening in early summer 1871, from there on it only added to a surprisingly varied array of amenities… boating, bowls, cricket, croquet. But despite an exciting innovation then becoming popular (potentially very loud!) - one particular item wasn’t yet in place. Which one?Answer? The bandstand. And Congleton is lucky to possess a picturesque example. How did they come to be such fondly regarded xtures? Apparently it was all to do with fostering Good Health. Congleton’s HeritageHistory article byJulie Elizabeth SmalleyNot just botanical displays, Victorian thinking gave public parks a social reforming role, no less. Wellbeing mattered a lot. Green spaces for citizens’ recreation and exercise were seen as a desirable moral inuence … and distraction from the demon drink. Parks were truly intended for ‘a better use of Sundays’! Music was uplifting for the soul. And of course brass bands were booming. 1861 saw a new trend set when a domed ‘band house’ for performances was built in South Kensington RHS Gardens, although open air musical events in fashionable Pleasure Gardens had been thrilling privileged classes since the 17th and 18th centuries. So when did this must-have entertainment accessory – importantly, for everyone to enjoy - arrive in Congleton? Local townspeople had to wait until 1914. Exactly 110 years ago this year. The eventual number of bandstands across the country was 1200, nearer 1500 counting not just parks but piers and proms too. Many met their demise from the 1940’s onward. Balancing that though has been a revival of interest, and therefore restoration of these heritage gems. Today Congleton is again lucky in retaining – and still using – its bandstand.Even when empty, or maybe especially so, the structure here is a prominent, quite elegant feature of Town Park’s landscape. Take a close look. With a canopy like a protective helmet, its raised octagonal platform underneath is reached by three steps, all with the practical idea of good acoustics in mind. Very necessary railings both separated musicians from audience, and could also be conveniently leant on by the latter. Of course, it wasn’t meant to be solely functional. Ornate, slim pillars supporting the roof are full of airy scrolls and curves, matched by the equally curlicue’d nial topping the whole design. Who wouldn’t want to put on Sunday Best and sit or stroll, and listen?‘If music be the food of love, play on’ penned Shakespeare. And that’s pretty much why bandstands were there. Let’s hope they continue.

38Wizard’s Wander - Alderley Edge, National Trust. This is a perfect family friendly walk, with multiple paths, amazing views and a cafe for a treat afterwards.Every time we have been to the National Trust site in Alderley Edge for a walk we have always come across a new route or section of a path. Making this walk always interesting and fun to do.And when we found they had improved the wooden assault course within the woodland we were delighted.Nature Play Areas - There is a section in the woodland just near the start of the walk which is now full of brand new tree trunk stepping stones, totem poles to climb, balance beams and a large wooden den. My daughters enjoyed playing on this and made a great addition to the walk, it was a good test of their balance and movement skills. The Routes - At the start there is a map with a number of dierent routes signposted around the woodland. From a quick 1.5km route to a longer 3-4km route. The signs and paths are clearly marked but we always seem to wonder from one route onto another as they all interlink. Each route takes you past a point of interest. The “Miner’s Ramble” takes you to the old unused mine entrance. The “Donkey Trek” leads you down into the valley and then back up again with a big climb. The “Wizard Wonder” takes you to the famous, impressive view where you can look over the Cheshire plains. You can get some fantastic photos here or simple stop and take in the views with a snack.“Castle Rock” leads you to another Days Out & Meals Out reviewsJenny, daysoutandmealsout.combrilliant view point looking over Cheshire and a place to sit on some impressive rock formations. The paths are mostly well surfaced but some can be muddy after rainfall so suitable footwear is advisable in the winter months. Some paths include a rocky climb too so it’s not suitable for pushchairs or scooters. The Wizard Tearoom - Established in 2016, The Wizard Tearoom is a lovely, independent café nessled within the beautiful National Trust site. The building dates back to the 16th century. What’s better than a hot drink to warm your hands after a chilly walk or that cake you promised to your little legged walker if they nish the route. The tearoom provides only an outdoor setting. Between the trees is an area of picnic tables and benches. Some are under a substantial canopy sheltering you from the elements. They have very recently installed a row of 3 wooden pods to sit in. These are a real benet to the tearoom as are very cosy to sit inside. They serve some really interesting drinks, including Hot Toddies, Baileys Hot Chocolate, Hot Blackcurrant and Chai Latte. The cake displayed are outstanding. Yummy homemade brownies, apjacks and sticky ginger cake. 40I’m a rm believer in the power of teamwork, even with competitors. In fact, I’ve forged some great friendships within my industry over the years. It might sound surprising, but supporting another business, even if we’re both eyeing the same clients, can be more rewarding than risky. Here’s why:Spurring Industry Growth: Think of it as planting seeds in a garden—you help your competitors grow, and in turn, your entire industry ourishes. By teaming up, we draw more attention and customers, making the marketplace livelier and more appealing for everyone involved.Shared Prosperity: Picture a potluck dinner—everyone brings something dierent to the table, and together, we all feast. As our industry expands, there’s more space for each of us to shine. This often opens doors for collaboration and cross-promotion, boosting success for all parties.Fueling Excellence: Competition isn’t just about winning; it’s about pushing each other to be the best we can be. The power of teamwork in businessBy keeping an eye on our rivals, we’re motivated to reach new heights. Plus, working alongside them gives us valuable insights into our strengths and weaknesses, spurring continuous growth and improvement.A Safety Net in Stormy Seas: Imagine being stranded in the middle of the ocean—it’s comforting to know there’s a life raft nearby. Similarly, in tough times, competitors can oer support instead of adding to the pressure. Building and maintaining good relationships ensures we have a safety net to fall back on when we need help or understanding. At the core, supporting your competitors isn’t about sacricing your own success—it’s about building a community where everyone thrives. Simple acts of kindness, like sharing their updates on social media or reaching out for a chat, can lay the groundwork for a mutually benecial relationship. After all, in the grand scheme of things, our competitors aren’t just rivals—they’re potential allies in our journey towards industry growth and excellence. So let’s embrace collaboration, celebrate each other’s victories, and pave the way for a brighter future together!
