6How to listen to your body...“LISTEN to your body.” I sometimes give this advice to clients at the end of their reflexology session. Listening to my body right now, it’s saying “I want to slob-out on the sofa in front of the telly and eat biscuits.” I know; not very healthy-holistic-therapist-like, is it? So, what does listening to your body actually mean and how do we do it? We may listen to our physical body – an aching back, stomach pain or tired feet. Our emotional feelings could be conveying worry, sadness, fear or indecision. The body is wonderful at communicating when something is wrong, especially a serious health issue such as chest pain or shortness of breath. You would certainly take notice and dial 999 straight away! Less dramatically, it may say you need to rest and take things slower for a day or two. A pain on movement will let you know to refrain from certain activities for a while. My physical body is constantly telling me I’m getting older (and I wish it would shut up). Lack of strength, stamina and flexibility are signs of aging and a warning to take more care; but certainly not an instruction to stop being active! A stressed body will definitely call out to you strongly. Stress can cloud your mind leading to poor decision-making, feeling overwhelmed and affecting mood and sleep quality. Taking positive steps to manage stress with holistic therapies such as reflexology can support you mentally, emotionally and physically during difficult times, and ongoing as part of your self-care regime. There is another part of us that likes to be heard and that is the gut. Not the part that digests food (although that does have its own unique communication methods) but our intuition, sometimes called our sixth sense. Intuition is like a Wise Old Sage that lives within us all. He frequently stops us making fools of ourselves, keeps us safe and guides us into making the right choices. Okay, I admit, my Old Sage has, on occasion, been less than wise but his intentions are good and he generally has my back. Intuition flows much clearer without over-thinking or seeking the approval of others. Often this gut feeling isn’t logical and yet it can still feel right. Without any scientific explanation, it is our superpower. The women’s version is often heralded as being superior to that of men. This is sure to be a myth but we may not all use this capability to the full. So, get in tune with your body. Treat it with kindness, respect and love. Replace any negativity with gratitude, as it serves you well day after day. Give your body what it needs to thrive and heal, which may simply be food to quell hunger or sleep because you feel tired. Longer-term, do you need to take more exercise, get off the sofa and eat fewer biscuits! Modern life makes it hard not to push through challenges but being able to pause and take a step back sometimes can build your future resilience. Allow your body and your inner Wise Old Sage to be your guide to good health and a calm mind.Jan JohnsonReflexology

10SPRING, it’s the season of new life and renewed energy. Nature has reawakened from its slumber, emerging once again in all its’ glory. At last, we can look forward to longer, warmer days, enjoy time with friends & family and spending long days in the outdoors. Spring is the season of celebration and renewed hope for many, however, for 15-20% of the UK population spring also marks the start of ‘allergy season’, which occurs in response to dramatic increases in pollen levels from trees, grass or flowers. Consequently, those who are sensitive to pollen prepare themselves for the dreaded onset of unpleasant allergic symptoms that can last throughout the spring and summer months. The immune system guards us against dangerous substances entering the body, killing off any that manage to get in. If the immune system incorrectly identifies a substance as being dangerous and attacks it, the result may be classical allergy symptoms:• Swelling of the mucous membranes in the nasal passages• Blocked or runny nose with itching and swelling • Redness, swelling and itching of the eyes due to reactions in the conjunctiva• Sinus pain • Wheezing and shortness of breath• Skin rashes and itchingDuring an allergic reaction, a great deal of histamine is released into the body. Histamine causes dilation of blood vessels, causing swelling and reddening, and triggers itching and burning sensations in the eyes, the nose and the throat – all those unpleasant symptoms driving you mad through the summer! Reduce these unpleasant symptoms by using remedies that counter the effects of histamine. Nettles are surprisingly effective at reducing histamine-type reactions, but drink the tea or take the drops rather than applying them externally! Quercetin, Vitamin C and Pine Bark (Pycnogenol) are additional effective anti-histamines, stabilising the mast cells, which release the cause of all the misery. Natural sources of quercetin include onions, apples and green tea. Reduce caffeine intake as well, as it triggers histamine.Luffa is a useful herb to take if symptoms manifest around the eyes and nose. Swift in its effect, it appears to deal with both blocked and runny noses, as well as watery and itchy eyes and a tickly throat. As it is taken internally, it is a good option for those who wear contact lenses and can’t use eye drops. Luffa is also available as a nasal spray, if nasal symptoms are the key feature of your symptoms. The great thing about these natural remedies is that they tend not to be associated with side effects such as drowsiness and rebound symptoms. They’re also non addictive and continue to prove effective after weeks of use. Selected remedies are also safe for children. Certainly appealing for those peering blearily at the world through a haze of pollen-induced tears or looking to ease that seasonal sneeze!Bare HealthHealth Store & Holistic Treatment CentreEasing the Sneeze!

12Let’s talk legal...THE Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020 has reformed divorce law in England and Wales with the introduction of no fault divorce.Under previous divorce law, you had to petition for divorce by saying that your marriage had irretrievably broken down and cite one of five facts, such as adultery or unreasonable behaviour. Saying that your husband or wife had committed adultery or behaved unreasonably could sometimes make it harder for a couple to separate amicably and to agree on childcare arrangements or a financial settlement. No Fault DivorceIn April 2022 no fault divorce law was introduced. You can now apply for a divorce by providing a statement of irretrievable breakdown of your marriage. The divorce application can be made by one spouse or can be a joint divorce application by both of you. There are only very limited ways that a no fault divorce application can be opposed.New Divorce TerminologyInstead of the divorce proceedings being finalised with the pronouncement of decree absolute, the new terminology includes the ‘final divorce Order’ concluding the divorce proceedings. No Fault Divorce TimescalesCourt rules mean that it takes six months to get a no fault divorce. It will not be necessary to attend a Court hearing to obtain your divorce but you may need to apply to Court for a child arrangement order if you cannot reach an agreement with your husband or wife over the parenting arrangements for your children. If you cannot reach a financial settlement then you may need to ask the Court to decide how your assets should be divided and make a financial Court order.Financial Settlements and No Fault Divorce Although the divorce process has been simplified it is still vital to obtain a financial Court order during the divorce Court process, either by agreement or by starting financial Court proceedings. That is because without a financial Court order in place confirming the agreement you have reached, or a Court ordered financial settlement, you risk your husband or wife asking for additional money or a share in the family business or your pension at a later date. A financial Court order therefore gives financial security and accordingly it is a pretty essential part of the divorce process as it gives you peace of mind so you can move on with confidence into the next chapter of your life. 14CONGLETON may be a small town when compared with Glasgow, Liverpool, or Stoke on Trent. But it has more than its fair share of celebrities and elite sportspeople who call the town “home”.The Olympic gold medallist, Ann Brightwell (formerly Packer) is one of our most notable neighbours. And we shouldn’t overlook her late husband, Robbie nor their son Ian. Robbie was an Olympic silver medalist while Ian had a distinguished career as a Manchester City footballer.Perhaps less well known is the fact we have another sporting superstar who walks amongst us. Another former top-flight footballer who’s one of the handful of players to have won all the major silverware in England and Scotland. His name is Willie Stevenson. Willie was born just outside Edinburgh in Leith on the Firth of Forth at the outbreak of the Second World War. His senior career saw him play for Glasgow Rangers, Liverpool and Stoke City. A regular at The Moss but otherwise this modest Scotsman has, unlike many of today’s players, kept a low profile. But he has much to shout about. Willie was one of Bill Shankly’s first signings when the legendary manager took the reins at Anfield. Willie played a pivotal role in winning the First Division (twice) and the FA Cup for The Reds in the mid1960s. Previously, he’d won the Scottish Cup and league title with Rangers. That’s more silverware than Steven Gerrard. He later player for the late, great Tony Waddington at the Victoria Ground.Willie’s been living the quiet life in Congleton for decades. As fascinated by football as I am, I was curious to discover why he’s so fond of Congleton. His arrival in the town was unconventional. “I used to live in the Lancashire town of Burscough and I used to drive up and down. There was one night I was driving home up the M6 from Stoke and it was foggy. I got lost in the fog and I ended up in Preston. So I said I’m not doing this again so I’d better have a look round and see if there’s somewhere closer to stay.”Willie first moved to the gorgeous little village of Timbersbrook with its amazing views over the Cheshire Plain. After sampling other parts of Congleton he settled with his better half, Sonia in leafy Mossley. “I’ve been all over Congleton. I’ve had more houses in Congleton than I’ve had clubs!”, he quipped. “I just liked it and felt happy. All my friends were Stoke City fans so that helped as well.”In Congleton Willie found a natural home. I don’t like resorting to national stereotypes so I’ll let Willie explain a little more about Congleton’s appeal to a lad from Leith. “I liked the pubs!”, he volunteered. “I tried all of them. The Moss, when Jimmy and Anne had it, was a wonderful pub.”The Moss is sadly no more. But Willie’s affection for Congleton continues to shins through. “It’s comfortable. For me it just feels cosy. No-one bothers you. It wouldn’t matter if I’d played for England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales they just don’t bother….just get on with it, lad!”. With an attitude reminiscent of Bill Shankly or Tony Waddington, it’s not surprising Willie Stevenson knew he’d hit the back of the net when he arrived in Congleton. Mark EdwardsonMan about town...

18MY parents are both in their 70s, which is still quite young in today’s world; however, needs can vary and can change, and there could come a day when they might require extra support to look after themselves. This would depend on the level of their requirements; however, keeping them in their own home for as long as we can would be their first choice.Needing to understand more about homecare, I sat down with Rachael, who is the Director of Ablewell Care, to find out how they work with individuals and families and support them in making life as easy as possible so they can stay at home for as long as they can.In my view care is not just about the practicalities, although they are vital, these being personal care, domestic support, meal prep or the administration of medication. For there to be ‘care’ there also has to be a feeling, which is difficult to put into words – warmth, compassion or listening (to name a few). I get this feeling when talking to Rachael; it is about understanding what our family would need. She might be the company director but one of her favourite things to do is her own shift every Friday evening where she goes into the homes of her regulars, gives them their supper, tends to their needs and then gets them into bed. Her face brightens as she expresses the feeling she gets knowing she has tucked them up into bed. They have everything they need, and they are warm and safe.Ultimately the job of a care provider is to take the worry away from anyone who needs help to live at home, to make their life easier so they can still be independent. I also need to mention the importance of governance around social care, accountability, standards, monitoring and improving. Ablewell Care follow all of these, and they are inspected and rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission, but it is clear that for Rachael and her team there is more to the process than this. Rachael herself worked her way up through the industry achieving qualifications in Health and Social Care, Health and Safety and Leadership/Management. Her knowledge and experience means Ablewell can also provide comprehensive assessments on an individual’s needs, observing them in their home environment, establishing daily routines, abilities and difficulties. The outcome is a report with recommendations that aim to enable continued independent living at home. The assessment can be followed up with support to source equipment as recommended or to access specialist services. This doesn’t always mean the person needs someone to come in regularly; it might just be advice on how to prevent falls or other equipment to make the home safer.I have no idea if or when the time will come for my parents, but after spending time with Rachael I feel more confident and less overwhelmed about the process of homecare. Knowing that we could just make a quick call and book an assessment is reassuring; it’s not the minefield I thought it would be.KatyBTV meets... Ablewell Care

22Congleton’s heritage...750 years into the past sounds remote. It is. But there lies the fascination. Significant because up-and-coming Congleton acquired new free borough status - meaning elected town mayors, merchant guilds and (just like this special year) an official ale-conner. Medieval costume then was distinctly different. So, for ordinary locals in the late 13th century, what did they wear?Everything depended upon social class. In general, men stepped out in a ‘cyclas’ straight-cut tunic – simply a rectangle of fabric with hole for the head, and worn plain and hanging, maybe with a rope belt. The cyclas was a unisex style of dress little changed since classical times. This long garment could also be split at the front to the waist. Over that another ‘super-tunic’ might be added. Men wore coloured hose on the legs, and braies as an undergarment. To hold those up, linen braies were tied both at the waist and around each leg. Completing the outfit was hat, hood, or a small, head-hugging coif. Shoes and boots might be quite pointy-toed. Travelling or adverse weather? Don your sleeved cloak, or mantle.Women in the country made their own clothes. Before any dressmaking could start wool had to be spun and cloth woven. Course woollen cloth was dyed either grey, green, dark brown, brownish-red, or even left undyed. No wonder working garb was plain and practical! On the farm a woman wore the usual ground-length tunic over a linen smock. At night she would sleep in this same chemise worn as an undergarment during the day - or perhaps in a fresh, clean one. Outside, married women were expected to cover their hair with a hood or all-in-one headdress. Ah…the wimple!Typical of the time this elaborate, but fussy, headdress was wrapped and pinned round head, neck and chin. A golden or jewelled strip would bind it on the forehead - if the wearer was wealthy. Otherwise, a plain silken one only, please. (Nuns were forbidden silk. For them it was white linen.) That’s not all. A veil was often worn as well. When outdoors she would need her thick woollen cloak - plus hat!Casting an eye over the quirks of costume gives an intriguing sense of distance. Yet to arrive on the scene was knitting. Buttons too had not become commonplace. Certainly there was no elastic. Congleton’s lordly de Lacy family might have enjoyed just better choices of fabric or colour. Curiously, only a few generations later real change in tailoring – and fashion – finally takes shape… Those amazing medievals!Julie Elizabeth Smalley

28LET’S begin by taking a moment to settle your body into a comfortable position. You may close your eyes or keep them slightly open with a soft focus, looking downward with your feet in front of you. Allow your spine to lift and your shoulders to soften (2 seconds).Today we will practice focused attention. During this meditation, you will focus on your breath.Think of a metaphor of resting a snow globe or a jar of muddy water onto a table. As we let it settle, it naturally becomes more calm and clear. The mind is similar. As we focus attention on the breath, the mind and body begin to relax, settle, and become more clear and feel more free (5 seconds).• Taking a full breath in and a long slow breath out (2 seconds).• Observe your breathing. Notice how your breath flows in and out.• Make no effort to change your breathing in any way.• Simply notice how your body breaths (2 seconds).• Notice the rise and fall of your chest as the air passes in and out (2 seconds).• Bring attention to a slow inhale and a long slow exhale (2 seconds).• When your attention wanders, as it will, focus again on your breathing.• Notice if any thoughts arise but don’t hold onto them.• Simply let the thoughts pass and bring your attention back to your breath (2 seconds).• Notice the stages of a complete breath. From the inbreath (2 seconds), to the subtle pause (2 seconds), the exhale (2 seconds), and the pause before taking another breath.• See the slight breaks between each breath.• Feel the air entering through your nose.• See it in your mind’s eye, flowing through the nose, and then down to your lungs.• Feel the lungs expand as they fill with air and relax again through the exhale (5 seconds).• As thoughts arise, simply allow them to pass and return your attention to your breathing (5 seconds).• Let’s finish now with a full deep breath in (2 seconds) and a long slow breath out (2 seconds) & imagine if you can the soft chime of a bell to signal the end of our meditation…*ding*…(15 seconds).Mike HollandMind Being YouSettle the mind...

Will a modern digital hearing aid help me to hear clearly in the presence of background noise? Most people do fi nd it more challenging to hear clearly in a noisy location. Of course the volume and clarity of the person you are trying to listen to is an also important factor. As we age we generally lose the ability to hear high frequency sounds. This tends to make it harder to hear the beginning and ends of words. Background noise is generally low frequency so does not diminish with age. Therefore a noisy room will still sound loud as we get older, however the beginning and ends of certain words will fade making it harder to actually distinguish what is being said. This is when we either ask the speaker to repeat themselves or we take a guess at what is being said, sometimes with embarrassing consequences!Whilst normal hearing can never be fully restored with a hearing aid, some modern hearing aids can help to boost the high frequency sounds without boosting the background noise thus helping you to regain some clarity in the presence of noise. 36WHEN we first moved to our little corner of Cheshire from Liverpool, my knowledge of the area wasn’t great. I had taken a job at BBC Radio Stoke and I wanted to be somewhere more rural having lived in a city for the last 15 years. On one of our many drives discovering the area, we found ourselves in Goostrey, a beautiful village which stretches along the quiet main road (called Main Road) with small clusters of houses coming off of it. At one end is a local shop with everything you need (including my son’s favourite sausage rolls), in the centre there is a triangle green and a group of shops with a café, newsagent, hairdresser, beauticians, pharmacy and post office. And there is a pub at the other end called The Crown, which serves meals and a friendly atmosphere. In fact, Goostrey has everything you need for the perfect village life. So, we enrolled our then-four-year-old son in Goostrey Primary and found a lovely house to rent. However, it was not meant to be, and the house fell through, but having fallen in love with the place we decided to keep our son at the school and make the short journey there every day. He is now in high school, time has flown by, and we have loved being part of the Goostrey community. I still have dreams of retiring there one day. Homes to buy in Goostrey don’t come up very often, new developments are very rare because of the concerns around interference with Jodrell Bank’s space telescopes, so when I saw Mount Pleasant Residential Park was adding some lovely new properties, I was excited to see them. Developed by Tingdene Parks, the new homes available are modern, bright and airy, with outside space. There are a few different homes to choose from with quality kitchens and bathrooms. To live on Mount Pleasant you need to be over 45, and the park itself has a lovely community. Goostrey itself is well connected, there is a regular bus, the 319 from Sandbach and Holmes Chapel. There is also a train station on the main route to Crewe, Stockport and Manchester. For someone looking to downsize and experience a more peaceful life, Mount Pleasant in Goostrey couldn’t be a better place. There are still a couple of years before I am eligible; however, I will be keeping an eye out when I am.KatyBTV meets... Tingdene Parks
