This labor of love has been supported by the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund, with the aim of promoting all the great things happening in Congleton. My husband, Matt, who is part of the Beartown Voice family, has designed the book and worked on all the creative aspects. By the time this magazine is delivered, your copy of the guide should have arrived with you. We do hope you enjoy it and nd it useful over the coming months. In the tapestry of life, I’ve rarely woven in threads of hobbies outside my professional and family commitments. When quizzed about leisure pursuits, my response has always highlighted my dedication to the magazine—a venture that transcends mere business to embody my true passion. Delving into the lives of business owners, uncovering their inspirations and aspirations, has been my way of connecting with the world.Yet, an unexpected twist in the narrative unfolded recently, introducing me to the art of felting. The idea that I, Katy, would be intricately sculpting carded wool into animal likenesses in my forties would have once seemed laughable. But here I am, completely captivated. The evenings now nd me scouring Instagram for felting marvels, amazed by artists who can replicate our furry companions with wool, capturing their essence with astonishing accuracy. Though my initial attempts have been humble, with dogs sporting slightly whimsical proportions, my enthusiasm remains undimmed. I’m committed to rening my craft, eager for the day my creations might spark joy in someone’s online wanderings. As April unfurls, bringing with it the promise of spring’s rst warm embrace, you’ll nd me not amidst the blossoming outdoors but in my kitchen, bathed in the brightest light, perfecting my felting technique. This dedication to a newfound passion marks a signicant chapter in my life.To all embracing their hobbies, whether indoors or out, as the season shifts—may April be a month of joy and discovery for you. I look forward to sharing more stories, inspirations, and perhaps a few felting triumphs, come May. Katy x

8Navigating through life’s unpredictability can often feel like an adventure. Yet, it’s undeniable that sometimes this adventure brings us face-to-face with moments that make our hearts race a little faster. Ever found yourself at an ATM, glancing nervously at the stranger lurking a tad too close for comfort? Or perhaps, quickening your steps to avoid a group that seems less than welcoming, their matching dark attire doing little to ease your worries. These snippets from our daily lives underline a simple truth: safety is a precious commodity in our modern world. Most days, thankfully, we wander through our routines wrapped in a cocoon of safety, blissfully unaware of the shadows. But every so often, a jolt of reality reminds us that our serene existence can be disrupted. This isn’t to say we should live in a constant state of alert. Far from it! The goal isn’t Power of PreparednessBy Mark MilwardHC Martial Arts Academyto cultivate fear but to arm ourselves with a sprinkle of vigilance and a dash of self-defense know-how.As someone who has embraced the martial arts lifestyle for over four decades, and has had the privilege of guiding others for nearly half of that time, I’ve seen the transformative power of preparedness. My students, from all walks of life, have shared countless stories where a situation seemed to teeter on the edge of danger, only to be defused with a blend of condence and common sense. More often than not, these encounters never escalate beyond a tense moment, thanks to the skills they’ve learned. It’s with great excitement that I share the news of my martial arts school’s relocation to a sparkling new home at Revolve Fitness & Training on Manor Lane. This move isn’t just about a change in scenery. It’s an opportunity to expand our community, to welcome individuals who are curious about harnessing their inner strength for outer peace. Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or someone who’s never thrown a punch in your life, there’s a place for you here.In the coming months, I’m thrilled to roll out a series of self-defense seminars designed to cater to everyone—with general groups, ladies only and groups for teenagers. These sessions are about building a mindset that prioritises your well-being and empowers you with grace and strength. If this piques your interest, I warmly invite you to reach out. Let’s embark on this journey of empowerment together. Remember, the goal isn’t to prepare for battle but to walk through life with an unwavering sense of security and self-assurance. Here’s to stepping into a safer, more condent version of ourselves. Looking forward to hearing from you soon!

12In our quaint town of Cheshire, Andy Bailey has stumbled upon a delightfully peculiar pastime that’s anything but ordinary. This Congleton local, armed with nothing but his smartphone and a keen eye for the extraordinary in the mundane, has become an overnight sensation on the internet as the unocial connoisseur of bins. Yes, you Katy meets... binuencer, Andy BaileyWithKaty O’Reganread that right - bins! Dubbed a “binuencer” by his growing fanbase, Bailey takes to the digital streets to showcase the unsung heroes of urban decor: the humble litter bins. His adventures have led him to some truly unique nds, grading them in a playful, Top Trumps-inspired rating system that goes up to a grand score of 25. Some of the standouts? A bin on Biddulph Road with a vibe so erce, it could be a contestant on Robot Wars, a charming dolphin-shaped bin making a splash at Glebe Farm, and a dashing bin bathed in pink light at The Little Cow Shed that could easily land a spot on a runway. This quirky quest began in the sleepy post-Christmas period, sparked by Bailey’s realization that no two bins in Congleton bore the same look - a refreshing change from the cookie-cutter trash cans dotting the landscape of commercial centers and cookie-cutter housing developments. He marvels at how these “little bits of street furniture” bring a dash of character and a wink of humor to the streets, making the town anything but dull.Bailey’s criteria? Personality, placement, pristineness, performance, and popularity. With 55 bins already critiqued and many more in his sights, he’s on a mission to prove that even the most overlooked objects can star in their own quirky tale of urban charm. So next time you’re out and about, remember: in Congleton, even the bins might just surprise you with their air and nesse.

14It might make some of you chuckle to know that I used to be a lollipop lady, not for a school, but for a council contracted rm doing stop and go trac control during road maintenance. Stop, go, stop, go for hours on end, in hindsight it’s a surprise really that my mental breakdown didn’t happen sooner in my working life. On my rst day I was handed a pair of steel toe capped boots, uorescent waterproof trousers, a coat and a hard hat. All at no expense to myself.PPER 1992 places a duty on every employer in Great Britain to ensure that suitable PPE is provided to ‘employees’ who may be exposed to a risk to their health or safety while at work. Now if you’d have told a contractor 40 years ago that they’d be legally responsible for providing me with boots to wear for work you can imagine what the reaction might have been. But ultimately, that initial nancial outlay has saved a huge amount of money and harm to people in the long term by preventing accidents and injuries at work. Speculate to accumulate and all that. Whilst the health and safety at work act focuses primarily on the prevention of physical injuries, there is an increasing focus on the provision of mental health in the workplace. Mental ill health costs the U.K. economy £105.2 billion each year, so you can bet there’ll be more legislation coming soon. It’s always been within our vision to provide businesses with a Glow sticks and Paying it forwardVicky,Bridging The Gap Mind Mattersproactive option for mental health support for employees, but until recently we struggled to nd a way to package it that aligned with our values. Most corporate providers will oer dierent levels of “schemes” and charge based on the number of employees. Many businesses I spoke to said that often not many employees actually engaged with the services, whether that’s due to not many people needing them (unlikely!), an issue with stigma and accessibility, or the services on oer being suboptimal I can’t say. But ultimately it means large prots for the provider, and employees left feeling unsupported by an employer who is trying to do their best. Then one day I was in a local cafe getting drink, and I saw the pay it forward board. Light bulb moment. If I’d still been wearing those hi-viz trousers I’d have easily been confused for a glow stick. The pay it forward board allows you to pay for a coee, write it on a post it note, like a voucher and stick it on the board. Then someone local who is struggling to aord can get a warm drink. The BTG pay it forward program means that a company can fund a certain amount of places on a program, if the employees need them that’s great, they’ll get proper hands on mental health care, rapidly accessible at a time and place convenient for them, they’ll develop long term coping skills plus new healthy lifestyle habits. If any funded places aren’t needed by employees we open these places to people locally who are desperate for support but cannot aord it. This way the money doesn’t line a CEO’s pocket, it’s fed back into the local community. As a business the impact of a good reputation within your local community cannot be underestimated. A good deed will come back to you 100x over. I don’t have enough words in this article to fully explore the implications of improved mental health amongst a local population but they are vast. The donations start at £62.50 per month making it aordable for any business to show they care. Take a look at www.BTG-mindmatters.org to complete an application.

16At Evolve Family Law we advise on co-parenting after divorce. For some families, co-parenting benets the parents and children. For other families, it is a potential nightmare scenario where one parent will continue to try to exercise control over the other through shared care.It is good for family law solicitors to have both positive and not-so-positive views on how co-parenting can work in post-separation families as it means our lawyers can look at all angles with you when advising on co-parenting after divorce. What is co-parenting after divorce?Co-parenting after divorce is not necessarily about equal parenting with the hours in a child’s week being split precisely between two homes. Successful co-parenting is more about your attitude to how you are bringing up your child in separate households. You may get to spend half the week with your child but you can also co-parent and get to see your child once a week or fortnight. Contact frequency may be outside your joint control if your work schedule means you cannot have overnight mid-week contact visits or contact every weekend. For family lawyers having a co-parenting arrangement is possible however often you see your children or however frequently they go o to see their other parent. In an ideal world that would be roughly equal care but that is not always possible for a whole host of reasons, including a child preferring to have one home base or one parent working unsocial hours.Let’s talk legal...WithEvolve Family LawHow to successfully co-parent after divorce To some, co-parenting after divorce comes naturally whilst for others it is a real struggle. Co-parenting involves discussion and compromise with your ex and that can be hard if you are still feeling raw after a separation or if you do not think your ex has great parenting skills as they are a disciplinarian or just give the kids anything they want for an easy life. Understanding your dierent parenting styles and bottom lines is a good start to negotiating a combined co-parenting style.Co-parenting is something that needs continued work. The early childhood years may have been easy to deal with but you may hit stumbling blocks when your children are older and their contact regime needs to t in with the demands of school and sporting activities or if you or your ex-partner meet a new partner and introduce them and step-children into one of the households.Family law solicitors can help you reach an agreement on contact and residence arrangements as well as the details of co-parenting by helping you negotiate a parenting plan. We can also support your discussions in family mediation or, where one parent will not negotiate, apply to the family court for a child arrangements order to record the residence and contact arrangements. Evolve Family Law can help at any stage of your co-parenting; whether you are newly separated and still living in the family home or divorced for years but having diculty in negotiating co-parenting during the teenage years or if one of you wants to change the agreed parenting arrangements because of a new job or ability to work from home.

Afternoon tea at The Rabbit Hole Tea Room. This quirky little tea room is inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The Rabbit Hole Tea Room is a family run business in Stoke on Trent in Staordshire and is a little hidden gem sitting opposite Stoke Minster. From the outside, it could look like any other cafe, but as you step inside, you literally travel down the rabbit hole and into the magical world of everything Alice in Wonderland. It’s so beautiful, and everywhere you look, there are tea cups, clocks, and the little white rabbits, making it such a whimsical place to visit. My sister in law booked ours for a special birthday treat for me. So she had left the details as a surprise. I was delighted to hear that you get to make personalised selections for your afternoon tea once you are there.Days Out & Meals Out reviewsJenny,Days Out and Meals Out ReviewsFirst o sandwiches, you can choose up to 4 dierent llings and what sort of bread they come on. Next you choose which of the massive sponge cakes you would like. On our day there was the choice of Victoria, Raspberry and White Chocolate, Bakewell or my choice of Chocolate Orange. Finally, you had to make the dicult choice of scone. Plain, fruit or the special of the day which was blueberry and white chocolate.I loved the fact you could make these decisions as it made even more exciting and specialDrinks - I was also very interested by their tea selection. They had all the usuals of breakfast, peppermint etc. but then they had some weird and wonderful teas.Chocolate digestive, carrot cake, vanilla rooibos. I had to go for rhubarb and custard. And oh my gosh it actually tasted like rhubarb and custard. The lovely member of sta said if i didn’t like the tea I could easily change it too but that wasn’t needed as I loved it. And now I have to nd out where I can get it for home!!My sister in law ordered a coee. Both of our drinks came in gorgeous, quirky pots. Everything was quirky in factThe Afternoon Tea - Our magnicent 3-tier-stand was delivered absolutely lled to the brim and was a real feast for the eyes. With both nger sandwiches and mini rolls, crisps, salad and chutney on the rst tier. Our choice of scones, cream, jam and a slab of our sponge cake was on the 2nd tier. Finally, on top was a selection of cute and tantalizing sweet treats. This included a heart shortbread, chocolate dipped strawberry, a Rolo mun, a very cute pot of cheesecake (which was to die for and I could have eaten a pint of the stu), and a pink lemonade in he smallest glasses ever which was an obvious nod to the famous “drink me” from Alice in Wonderland. For any Afternoon Tea fan, the Rabbit Hole is an absolute must tea room. Everything about it from the gorgeously made food, the little cute details, and the friendly sta made it such a special and memorable experience. The tea room really is unique & so much eort goes into the customers’ experience that this place deserves being so busy.Alice in Wonderland Tea Room• Open Thur-Fri 11:30-15:30. Neither my sister nor I grew up in our adopted home towns. I chose Congleton and whereas my younger sibling chose a place that has attractions and scenery aplenty. She lives with her family in a small town called Doune. It’s just outside the magnicent Scottish city of Stirling that’s often referred to as the brooch that pins the country together. We’re a competitive pair but it’s friendly. We’re loving and very close but there’s a mile-wide streak of deadly seriousness about it.We got talking about which town is better. Well, Congleton won the popularity contest with its population of 28,000 versus Doune’s 2,200. However, it felt like comparing the top speed of an Italian super car with that of a small hatchback. I had to admit it was silly and a bit too much of a slam dunk. So, we moved on to the countryside around our towns. It’s dicult to beat Scotland in this category and I knew I was up against it. My sister immediately cited the desolate beauty of the southern Highlands and pretty little towns such as Callander and Strathyre. I Man About To wnMark Edwardsoncountered with the undeniable majesty of The Peak District, Peover and Goostrey. This was closer than I imagined but it was far from over because my sister caught me with a surprise right hook. “Loch Lomond!” she cried triumphantly. I mumbled something about Astbury Mere and Rudyard Lake but it was too little too late.I suggested we compare notable or important buildings. We agreed Stirling, being an ancient seat of government, was excluded. I reciprocated with Crewe. My opener was a zinger - Joddrell Bank with its global reputation for scientic and astronomical discovery. How could I lose? Well, it wasn’t that simple. My sister oered Doune Castle in response. At rst I laughed scornfully but then I realised what she meant. The building is world famous. Not as Doune Castle but as the location for the infamous scene in “Montry Python and the Holy Grail” where King Arthur and his knights encounter The Insulting Frenchman with his outrageous accent and rude gestures. There was discussion about whether Rob Roy’s grave at Balquhidder trumped John Bradshaw’s family home in Congleton. The former is a Scottish folk hero, the latter the man who signed King Charles the First’s death warrant. We decided Congleton had edged it considering John Bradshaw’s role in huge constitutional change for England, Ireland and, crucially, Scotland.Scottish beer is a favourite tipple for me. My sis likes the ales produced in and around Congleton. After a few of them we decided it was a draw.My sister had spent a week in Congleton during the recent dry spell. As she left I wished her a safe journey home and hoped the weather in rainy Scotland would be just as pleasant. She turned her head toward the blue Cheshire sky and looked back at me wistfully with the saddest eyes. I’m convinced I even spotted a teardrop of regret.I’m not one to gloat but I think it was an admission of defeat.

32Spring is the season that spurs us on to do some spring cleaning. Maybe even tackling those darkest recesses that lurk under the bed! Well okay; possibly not going that far, but the warmer weather and burgeoning new life of the season does have a positive, motivational eect on us. A spring clean of the house is a ritual renewing, bringing freshness and light. An opportunity to declutter the old and unused possessions, creating a clear, calm space. Therapeutic as it is, a spring clean is not just for houses. The whole concept of cleansing and renewal also applies to ourselves. Removing unwanted or negative thoughts and emotions and replacing them with fresh perspectives, attitudes and ideas. The process of allowing this natural cleansing of mind and body is as simple as stepping outside! The warming rays of the sun stimulate the brain to release a hormone called serotonin. This is believed to boost mood by regulating feelings of happiness and anxiety. It also helps with sleeping, healing and digestion. We also get vitamin D from the sun which is important for bone health, cell growth and reducing inammation. The sun does, of course, have a more sinister side in the form of harmful UVA and UVB radiation, so we need to be sensible in our enjoyment of it.The mind/body spring cleanse comes from being outside in nature which can be enjoyed in any weather. If you are up early at this time of year, the dawn chorus is a sound of wonder; at it’s best around 30 minutes either side of sunrise and guaranteed to lift your spirits. The benets of nature on wellbeing have been well documented and was cited as one of the key factors in helping people cope with the stress of the Covid pandemic. This connection with the natural world involves all the senses. Noticing the beauty around us, hearing the birdsong or the sound of the wind in the trees, the scent of a woodland after rain or owers in the garden. A multitude of positive emotions can surface when you are immersed in nature. Joy, calmness, clarity of thinking and inspiration for creativity. Research has shown that people who are more connected to nature tend to be happier, less stressed and less likely to suer from poor mental health. If you have a garden the process of growing your own food or owers brings obvious rewards and achievements, and is a great way to involve the whole family. Outdoor activities such as hiking or cycling keep you t whilst enjoying sunshine and wonderful scenery. You could even help to enhance your local natural environment by planting wildlife-friendly plants, building an animal habitat or becoming a conservation volunteer.Ways to connect with nature are endless and the benets to mental and physical health and wellbeing are unparalleled. This is the perfect time to get outside, attune your senses and let nature’s spring clean work it’s magic!Spring Clean Your Wellbeingby Jan JohnsonReexology

38Yes, you did read it right Shil-a-jit! “What on earth is that?” Is often the response I get when conversing with our lovely customers about this wonderful product in store. Nature provides us with so many wonderful gifts to support our health and wellbeing and although a bit of a tongue tangler, Shilajit is certainly up there as one of them and traditionally considered the most important drug of Ayurvedic and folk medicine systems.Shilajit is a type of resin that oozes out of cracks in the layers of rocks in high mountainous regions such as the Himalayas in Nepal, the Ural Mountains of Russia, the Altai mountains of central and Eastern Asia and the Hindu Kush in Afghanistan during hot weather and from geothermal pressures. Formed from the decomposition of organic matter it is an ancient Ayurvedic medicine that has been traditionally used for over 5000 years as a ‘rejuvenating’ tonic to support youthful and long lifespan or aid recovery from illness. It has been mentioned in ancient Sanskrit texts and referred to as the ‘conqueror of mountains and destroyer of weakness’ with a growing body of scientic evidence supporting its use as a revitalising agent. According to Chaudary et al Shilajit was rst identied by Himalayan villagers observing large white monkeys migrate to the mountains in the warm summer months. The monkeys were seen to be chewing a semi-soft substance that owed from between layers of rock which the villagers attributed the monkey’s great strength, longevity and wisdom. Subsequently, they began to consume it themselves and reported a broad spectrum of improvements in health. The highly revered remedy has a thick tar like consistency yet is water soluble and can vary from light brown to dark brown in colour. Alongside its energy giving and restorative properties, shilajit has also been widely reported to have many other benecial properties such as improved cognitive, cardiovascular, immune and gut health. It has also been shown to support detoxication, skin health, support hormonal balance, increase libido, alleviate pain response, reduce inammation and lower blood glucose levels. All in all a of host of benets that support and nourish the ‘whole’ body and that are attributed to Shilajits unique and diverse composition, housing a wealth of bioactive compounds.Fulvic and humic acid are two of the most prominent compounds with fulvic acid (created from the gradual decomposition of certain plants and animals by the action of microorganisms), making up 50 - 60% of Shilajits content. On its own fulvic acid has numerous health benets and is noted for its ability to enhance the eciency of our cells to utilise important substances like antioxidants and electrolytes and has been described as the ultimate ‘nutrient booster’. However, shilajit also boasts an abundance of minerals (over 85 in total) including iron, zinc, copper, selenium and magnesium and many other important health supporting substances such as polyphenols, amino acids and triterpenes. An ancient remedy that truly is a nutritional powerhouse and may well be the secret to maintaining a healthy body and delaying physical and mental decline in our advanced years. Shilajit can be sourced as a resin and diluted in water or in capsule form. However, its important to take note that quality can vary greatly so with that in mind seek out quality brands that are GMO free, preservative free, pesticide free and ideally, organic. To discover more about Shilajit and how it may benet you do drop by Bare Health your local independent health store and speak to an experienced advisor. 39WILL WRITING • WILL TRUSTS • ASSETS TRUSTPOWER OF ATTORNEY • INHERITANCE TAX PLANNINGTelephone 01270 667 912 or visit www.sanctuarytts.comSanctuary Tax & Trust Services Ltd, 41 Lawton Road, Alsager ST7 2AAAs the cost-of-living spirals and more of our children struggle to get a footing on the property ladder it is now more important than ever to plan our family’s inheritance. The team at Sanctuary Tax & Trust explain how many families nd themselves victims of avoidable losses and why simply writing a will does not guarantee our family will inherit as we wish. For the vast majority of people, we spend all our lives working to build up wealth, through property, savings and pensions we look at providing nancial security for our families and when our nal day arrives, we hope these assets will pass to the people we care about the most, partners, children, relatives and friends. Traditionally, people have chosen wills to document their wishes and while writing a will is important, it does not provide any protection for the assets within it.Considerations when planning InheritanceCare Fees – As we live longer the likelihood of needing care becomes greater and under the government’s changes to the social care act should the need for care arise, we could see our asset taken down to just £14,250. The new assessment process will see everybody with property and savings over a combined value of £23,250 being required to pay for their care.Relationship Failure – When passing assets purely through a will we see many leaving their assets to their children but not giving consideration to what would happen if one of their children was to divorce. This can lead to a child seeing half of their inheritance in the hands of an ex-partner and in the event of early bereavement this can lead to grandchildren being disinherited.Inheritance Tax – The current IHT framework can be complex and unknowingly people can leave their children and even grandchildren with an Inheritance tax issue.Probate – The cost of probate has risen dramatically over the last few years, and it can be a lengthy and drawn-out process. On average, with a valid Will, probate will typically take 6 – 12 months to complete, without a Will it may take up to 2 years. It’s Never the Wrong Time To Do The Right Thing – While people appreciate that inheritance planning is important many will delay seeking the correct advice. By putting o arranging our aairs we run the risk of running out of time, or in the event of illness, seeing our options dramatically reduced. Why Sanctuary Tax & Trust Services? With over 20 years of experience in Estate and Inheritance planning we have helped families in the area protect their assets and plan their inheritance in the most cost-eective way. While the individual family’s circumstance may vary, the one constant is that each family aims to provide the maximum amount of inheritance possible without the stress of complex legal jargon.

44 The Remembering Nell Foundation was set up in memory of my daughter Nell Jones.Nell tragically lost her life in the terrorist attack on the Manchester Arena on 22nd May 2017, she was 14 years old.Nell was a very kind and considerate young girl who hated unkindness and was a loyal and trusted friend to those who were close to her.As a daughter… she was the best and I am immensely proud to say she was mine. Almost 7 years on and the pain of losing her is still as raw as it was then.As a family we wanted to create a legacy for Nell, one in which her love and kindness would continue to help others. With that in mind we set up the Remembering Nell Foundation and with the support of so many fabulous people we have been able to full so many of Nells values. We have supported the Wingate Centre with new Gym equipment for children with special needs, Crewe Buddies with days out, again for children with special needs. We provided laptops during lockdown for children who were unable to access them for home schooling and we regularly support the Wood Street Mission in Manchester with books and Christmas presents for disadvantaged families.Remembering Nell FoundationFind out more:facebook.com/rememberingnellThese are just a few of the Charities and individuals we have been able to support through the kindness of donations and fundraising and I thank everyone for their support. On the 27th April, just a few days after what would have been Nells 21st birthday we are hosting a Ball at the De Vera Cranage Hall Estate. It will be a night of fun, friendship and fundraising, but the most important thing is to celebrate Nells life and the legacy she has left with us.We are thrilled to welcome Yvette Royal as our entertainment on the night.
