10WE are currently at a point where there are fewer unemployed people than there are job vacancies. This is a good situation for job seekers or those wanting a change of career.I recently had a chat with Rachael at Ablewell Care about why a career in the care sector is a great option, and it turns out that there are many good reasons to consider this path.Rachael is a director in the business and she has worked her way up through the industry achieving qualifications in Health and Social Care, Health and Safety, and Leadership/Management. However, she still does a regular shift in the community, firstly so she can stay connected to her staff and clients’ needs, and secondly because she just loves what she does.I opened our conversation with the elephant in the room – is working in care just about helping with personal hygiene? It is the first thing I connect to the job and want to get this topic out of the way. The answer is that looking after someone’s cleanliness may be part of the job, but it depends on each client’s needs. Anyone who does this regularly will tell you that it is not a big deal; doing these duties is more about showing the individual the respect they deserve, and if you have looked into Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, physiological fulfilment is the basic requirement that must be met for a human to thrive, have a feeling of belonging and to have self-esteem. It does make me understand the value that providing this service to someone brings, and this would outweigh any concerns I personally have of doing these duties. There are many other benefits when working in care, too. You get the opportunity to meet people who have a lifetime of experience, and many enjoy sharing their fascinating stories, journeys, and unique perspectives. The hours are not 9 to 5, but as our lives now are so varied, working traditional hours doesn’t suit everyone anyway, People who require care might need help getting up in the morning, going out on a trip later in the day, or they may need help round the house or in the evening before bed and with meals. The demand for care is growing. Our elderly population is increasing as we live longer, therefore if you like helping others and enjoy this field of work, you are never likely to be short of options. When starting in care experience is not essential, as you can learn on the job and gain qualifications while working. The right type of person needs to be warm-hearted, a good listener, organised, dependable and have a genuine concern for others, these are skills which describe a good person and I am sure we have this in all of us.Ablewell are recruiting now, for more information go to their website ablewellcare.com or call 01625 669854.KatyBTV meets... How well do you sleep?DID you know that regular reflexology sessions can be an effective way to help balance your sleep pattern and improve the quality of your sleep? This natural, holistic therapy promotes relaxation in both mind and body and helps to relieve the stresses of daily life. We need sleep to maintain both physical and mental function. Prolonged disturbed sleep can have negative health consequences affecting energy, learning, memory, mood and much more. We know how we feel when we don’t sleep, but why do we become unconscious and paralysed during each night-time? Surely evolution wouldn’t have made us so vulnerable without a very good reason! It is believed we sleep to allow recovery time for our body and brain. During sleep the brain’s energy is restored and new brain cell connections are strengthened. It is also a time when the brain can clear out toxins produced when we are awake. Memories are stored and new learned experiences made accessible for the next time we need them. Our mental and emotional health are affected by the amount of sleep we get. Areas of the brain that control the stress/fear response are more likely to over-react with sleep deprivation. Mental health and sleep are intertwined, as these issues can often contribute to sleep disturbances, which, in turn, can trigger their progression. We need sleep to maintain a healthy immune system. Infection-busting proteins called cytokines, immune cells and certain antibodies are produced during sleep. Our bodies know this, which is why we want to sleep more when we are ill. Recommended amounts of sleep depend on age, with children needing more sleep than adults. Around 7-9 hours is a good average for an adult. 10 tips to help you get a good night’s sleep:1. Take positive steps to manage stress levels with holistic therapies such as reflexology.2. Lower the bedroom temperature and minimise light and noise.3. Your body has a natural clock known as circadian rhythm. Exposure to sunlight or bright light during the day helps natural time-keeping.4. Night-time exposure to light has a negative effect on your circadian rhythm. Blue light emitted by smartphones etc. is especially detrimental to sleep quality.5. Switch to decaffeinated drinks and avoid alcohol in late evening.6. Avoid eating a large meal late at night.7. Be consistent with sleep and waking times.8. Reduce fluids in late evening.9. Daily exercise is one of the best ways to improve sleep health.10. Maintain a sleep routine to help you relax. Listen to music, read a book – try different methods to see what works for you. A point to note is there may be a health issue that is causing sleep problems. It is important to see your GP if you are concerned. Sleep is often neglected as a vital component to health and well-being. Far from being a passive activity; it’s actually when the magic happens!.Jan JohnsonReflexology14

Congleton’s heritage...PICTURE this: a design style that’s dignified and grand, curiously detailed, contains codes and often wordplay too - and is very historical. What is it? Answer: a coat-of-arms. Something Congleton this year is seeing in plenty! In heraldry message is key, but complex. So how and why did it happen? Let’s demystify. On medieval battlefields distinguishing between friend and foe was vital. Warriors chose unique personal emblems for their shields and flags. Heralds could therefore identify the dead or, more happily, announce contenders at tournaments. (The Anglo-Saxon word-element ‘here’ meant army.) Over their concealing armour the cloth tunic, or surcoat, featured these same emblems. Hence quite literally a coat-of-arms. The whole advertisement boasted of partnerships, property, profession… effectively an early form of branding. How is the device constructed? Well, it reads like a knight’s wardrobe. Start with the classic shield (an escutcheon). On it place bars, crosses, diagonals - called ‘ordinaries’. Dividing this shape into sections increases scope for display. Take care. Colours - red, green, blue, black, purple, orange, and maroon plus metals gold and silver - are all symbolic. Precious purple stands for sovereignty and justice. The seriously fun part is selecting your favoured pictorial ‘charges’ - almost anything from antlers to anchors. Now balance a ‘supporter’ each side for stability. Choose an animal, real or mythic, objects perhaps or representations of people. Again heed the hidden meaning. Lions spell ’dauntless courage’ whereas the bear is recognised as strong, cunning and ferociously protective.Placed above the central shield, the helmet or ‘helm’ topped by a plume-y crest provides yet further ID. So-called family crests are this one small portion. Scarf-like drapery - ‘mantling’ – originally suggested the knight’s neck cloth, often looking authentically cut to pieces! Final flourish is a billowing scroll set below to deliver a weighty motto, possibly in Latin for impressive effect.Initially designs were connected to individuals, not everyone sharing that surname. From the 17th century the practice widened from high-ranking families to be embraced by states, civic institutions, and organisations of all kinds. And Congleton’s own? Versions usually include the noble de Lacy emblem of a purple lion (see above). Sporting conger eels and barrel or ‘tun’ shows how playful puns are standard!A coat-of-arms is, technically, an ‘armorial achievement’. Nearly a thousand years after first use, updated, imaginative and maybe even amusing heraldic designs are still being created. Yet all spring from military roots. Check out Congleton’s town centre this year for a creative colour parade of heraldic flags and banners-on-buildings. Quite an… achievement!Julie Elizabeth Smalley16

MINDFULNESS practice means feeling how you feel. Instead of avoiding or shoving down pain, you accept it with care and attention. But that doesn’t mean you have to sit in pain, doing nothing. The simple practice of smiling can actually trigger joy in the mind and body, helping relieve some of this pain.In this exercise, you will mindfully tune in to how it feels to bring a gentle smile across the face.• Allow the eyes to close, and find a comfortable sitting posture.• If you are able to, keep the spine straight to invite energy and alertness into the mind and body.• Begin by bringing your attention to the sensations of the body breathing.• Start with the abdomen, tuning in to the rising and falling.• Let the body breathe itself; you don’t need to breathe in any certain way.• After two minutes, move your attention to the chest.• Feel the expansion and contraction here as the body continues to breathe.• When you notice that the mind has wandered, simply bring the chest back into your awareness.• Allow two more minutes to pass.• Now move your attention up to the nostrils.• You may feel the breath at the tip or base of the nose or on the upper lip.• Pay attention to the subtle sensation of breathing here.• Open your awareness up slightly to scan the face.• From the forehead down to the chin, notice what you can physically feel.• Tune in to the eyes, the mouth, the jaw, the cheeks, and anything else that takes your attention.• Finally, allow yourself to softly smile.• You may try thinking of something that brings you joy as a form of encouragement.• As you smile, notice how the face and the breath feel.• Tune in to any changes in the breath, the muscles in the face, and any feelings that arise.• you may try letting the smile go and bringing it back several times, tuning in each time to the experience in the body as you do so.• When you complete the practice and allow the eyes to open, sustain the smile for a moment.• Let the smile fade slowly on its own.• And then smile easily once more to bring your practice to a gentle close.Mike HollandMind Being YouThe Practice of Mindful Smiling...18

I’M very excited about the new Holmes Sweet Home opening in the black and white corner shop at 34 London Road in Holmes Chapel: however, there will be many who remember when in that location there was a wonderful shop called Interior Motives, which sold beautiful items for the home and also did interior design. Husband and wife team Mark and Maxine left the shop in 2013 to grow the business in a bigger premises in Brereton, focusing on the interior design side of their company. In 2021, the time had come to grow again and restart the much-loved retail side of the business, and after six months of getting the premises ready for The Design House, at the end of January they opened on the new Manor Lane Business Park (behind the vets and right next to Screwfix).I popped in to meet Mark and have a look around The Design House (and couldn’t resist a little treat for my own home while I was there). They have separated the unit into the downstairs workshop and store, where they bring in furniture pieces and get everything ready for the interior design side, and then upstairs is the shop and showroom. As you enter you immediately see beautiful lighting and well-positioned furniture. I make my way upstairs and I am greeted by Mark, who starts to give me a tour. The space is large and separated into different sets, replicating the rooms of a home. Everything on display is for sale, from lamps, to cushions, to ornaments, homes accessories and candles. We start in the kitchen area which leads on to a dining area, lounge, and bedroom. They have their own range of bespoke cushions and soft furnishings plus a range of off-the-shelf stock, all from quality suppliers. They have display lamps which can be purchased, plus a catalogue full of different designs, and with Mark and Maxine’s expertise you can find the right one for your style. This is the same with fabrics and wallpapers; they have one of the largest ranges in Cheshire, with prices of wallpaper from £20 a roll to buying by the metre, and they can also make curtains and cushions to match in their own work room.BTV meets... The Design HouseMark explained the main aim for this new location is for retail; they plan to update their room sets regularly to inspire their customers and keep them up to date with trends. Their current bestseller is a large diffuser with reeds, and I can understand why as the shop has a lovely smell in the air. They regularly attend trade shows and visit their suppliers to keep their ranges fresh and up to date, with many affordable pieces. I picked myself up a blue and white checked jar with a gold trim, which now has pride of place on our fireplace. I also spent some time talking to Mark about artwork, as I am never very good at choosing the right thing, and he was very happy to help me with ideas for gallery walls.I would describe The Design House as a one-stop shop for creating a room set for your home. This doesn’t have to be a full makeover; it could just be a change of wallpaper or soft furnishings or just an update of some art or accessories. The new unit has the space, the experts, and the choices available to do this, with many items to buy on the day for yourself or as a gift.I asked Mark if using an interior designer is just for the rich and famous. His answer was a clear no, they can start with going through some ideas and coming up with a recommended shopping list or mood board, all the way through to a full overhaul. If you do decide to go for new flooring, decorating, or lighting, they have local trusted tradespeople to do all the work. The team are clearly very proud of the work they do. They showed me images of a job they completed in Mallorca recently and it is simply stunning, from the furniture and the lighting down to having the banister rail custom made. The team at The Design House chose the new Manor Lane Business Park Holmes Chapel as the location for their expanding venture because the village is blossoming, the centre is becoming a lovely place to visit with places to eat and drink, buy flowers and gifts and cards, plus we have access to local produce at Bidlea, Lowes, Goostrey Homes and Leisure and Lowes. It is also close to the motorway and the train station links us to so many places. Plus, it is easy to park directly outside!I wish Mark, Max and the team all the luck in the world; I will certainly be back for a browse very soon to hopefully add to my checked jar which sits very well in our lounge.Katy20

Gardening tips...TO weed or not to weed your garden. Spring’s arrival brings light breezes and rain showers - ideal conditions for those lovely weeds to appear just where you don’t want them. But before you reach for the weed knife or hoe & extract them, you may want to consider the following:-The dictionary defines a weed as “a wild (not deliberately cultivated) plant growing where it is not wanted”. It doesn’t define a weed as a bad thing but many people assume that weeds in a garden are unwanted and remove them.So why are weeds seen as troublesome?Weeds compete for air, light, plant food and space. They deprive cultivated plants of these requirements and reduce their vigour, yield and beauty. Weeds can harbour plant and insect diseases which can adversely affect insects that are beneficial to our gardens. Weeds extract nutrients from soil that are needed for plants and vegetables growth. Thus we tend to remove them when they appear. But weeds do have benefits.Weeds can look beautiful e.g. creeping buttercups, bright yellow dandelions in a green lawn. They provide colourful ground cover e.g. Herb Robert (pink flowers) or Forget-me-Nots (blue flowers). Weeds contribute to our biodiversity e.g. areas given over to nature in a garden create natural habitats for bugs & insects. Some weeds are edible - nettle leaves can be turned into nettle soup and dandelion petals can become dandelion wine!So should we weed our gardens? It is ultimately a personal choice as to whether or not weeds remain in a garden. An area of garden given over to nature is beneficial to wildlife & our environment. If you prefer colourful flower beds, fruit or vegetables plots or a cleared patio area for barbeques then the weeds may need to go. Any weeding work we undertake is chemical free - roots are dug out by hand and seed heads cut off (as these are the two main ways that weeds propagate). This results in weed free flower beds without damage to nearby cultivated plants. Regular turning of the soil with a hoe to loosen it two to three weeks later keeps any further weeds at bay. Weeding does take time but the results are definitely worth it!Tidy My Garden24

26IN years gone by hundreds of Congletonians would have been beavering away on their costumes and floats ahead of the biggest event staged in by our wonderful little town. I speak of Congleton Carnival. Many would have been working in to the night just to make sure everything was right for the big day.Congleton Carnival saw tens of thousands turn out for the vast parade as it snaked through the town towards the park before terminating at Hankinson’s Field. You might well have been amongst the wide-eyed observers who lined the streets. I certainly was.Sadly for now, the nationally significant event is no more. But the memories of a town transformed into a huge fairground remain strong. A social media discussion threw up dozens of fond recollections and reminiscences.Kerry told us she was in the carnival parade three times with Buglawton School. She recalls her teacher, Mr Dale’s enthusiasm for the event and how he’d spend months on costumes with his pupils. Kerry says Mr Dale helped the children create a Chinese dragon and a train. Kerry says she and her friends were so excited they didn’t sleep the night before the carnival.Chris told us about some of the carnival day mischief. He laughed when he remembered using a water balloon to dislodge a bobbie’s helmet. If Cheshire Police are reading this I can help you clear up an historic crime.Elaine said there was bunting everywhere along the procession route especially on Kinsey Street. She went on, “It’s funny to think I cannot recall it raining at all!”Some of the fondest carnival memories were forged during childhood. Lee it was amazing to “…see all the massive floats that had taken weeks if not months to decorate. And all the stunts and shows in the park.”One of those stunts almost ended badly. John was standing next to the ice cream van on the park bridge when a member of the Army’s Red Devils sky-diving team crash landed on top of it. Only pride took a knock as it was Mr Softy! The Red Arrows were visitors too. As were the Household Cavalry. Sandra says they’d arrive by train on Friday, make their way to the cattle market where they’d billet for the night before the big day. There were some sights a visitor to Congleton might have found utterly surreal. Eileen says she was up early one carnival morning and as she approached the fire station roundabout a rocket appeared out of the mist. What a float that must have been. And then there were the Red Barrows…Jude’s favourite memory was the “bride” on Berisford’s wedding cake who was so nervous she’d drunk a little too deeply from the jar marked “Dutch courage”. “We were literally propping her up all the way through the parade”.The carnival may be a thing of the past. But this year we’re reminded by Suzy the town’s 750th birthday will be celebrated with a Medieval Festival on Saturday the 13th of August. The flags and banners are already proudly displayed. Beartown Voice travels... RECENTLY on a trip to Scotland we decided to break up the journey and make an overnight stop in Lancaster, where we happened across a great hotel called Lancaster House.Part of the English Lakes group, Lancaster House is a short distance from Junction 33 off the M6 and is a 10-minute drive from Lancaster city centre, located next door to Lancaster University Management School.Having stayed in an English Lakes Hotel before, my expectations were high, and this hotel lived up to them. Lancaster House is a 4-star dog-friendly hotel and is surrounded by fields. Our room was more like a suite with a sliding door separating off a bedroom and seating area with balcony doors opening up to let in the fresh spring air.We had left our two furry family members (and our son) at home, so we had the enjoyment of our spacious room with two large TVs, a beautiful deep free-standing bath, and fluffy robes all to ourselves! Once we had settled in, we made the short drive into the city centre for a wander round.Lancaster has a fascinating, varied and ancient history, the city’s first recorded name, Lancastre, meaning ‘Roman fort on the River Lune’ is recorded in the Domesday book in 1086. Of national importance is Lancaster Castle, a Grade 1 listed building which sits in the centre of the city on a hilltop. It is a small city and, being compact, easily explored. There are a variety of museums – the City Museum in the Market Place (in the old Town Hall), the Judges’ Lodgings, Doll Museum and the Maritime Museum, to name but a few. We spent a few hours exploring and found a cosy pub for a drink before we headed back to the hotel for dinner. We ate our evening meal in hotel restaurant the Foodworks; the food was lovely with a great selection of wine on offer. Tired and very relaxed, after our meal we had a nightcap in the bar by the open fire and enjoyed the atmosphere of the other guests chatting away.In the morning, my husband went down to the hotel’s pool for a dip. The leisure club includes a heated pool, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, a sauna, steam room and a gym. After a perfect breakfast, we packed up to continue our journey. I promised myself this gem of a hotel wouldn’t be a stop-off point from now on, more of a destination. It has everything we need for a break away, and we would be back soon. Sometimes the best places are the ones you find by chance, and this is one of those. 32WE are currently in the middle of exam season for those among us currently at school or in higher education! Goodness, how that word used to fill me with dread! For those who easily retain information, have a photographic memory, have great recall of knowledge and facts or simply perform well under ‘test conditions’ on the day, sitting exams may be a breeze. However, for many, exams, revision and the pressure to achieve the necessary grades to attain that all important college/university place or land that dream job can be an extremely stressful and overwhelming time. Reflecting on the knots I used to tie myself in and how much pressure I put myself under got me thinking of ways in which the stresses and strains of exam season can be eased and how we can aid our overloaded brains at such times. The good news is there are a numerous approaches to aid learning, enhance brain function and fabulous top tips to help minimise stress levels during times of study and the dreaded exam season.Essential Fatty Acids - Healthy Fats – Are You getting enough?Did you know that the brain is almost 60% fat? Essential fatty acids, like EPA and DHA, make up a large percentage of the brain’s structure in order to promote development and function. Fuelling the brain with the right amount and type of fats is vital for improved academic performance and cognitive development. Falling short of these essential nutrients may increase the risk of behavioural issues, learning difficulties and attention deficit disorders. Therefore consuming oily fish or marine algae through diet or regular supplementation with Omega 3 oils containing adequate levels of EPA/DHA is integral to enhancing optimal academic performance.Strath – just the tonic!Strath is a traditional swiss herbal yeast extract that can be taken by all the family. It has been scientifically proven to aid concentration whilst improving the active absorption of vital substances from food especially the micronutrients magnesium, zinc, iron and vitamin B1. A double blind study on 60 test subjects over 12 weeks showed that the herbal yeast group achieved an average improvement of 64% in comparison with the improvement in the placebo group of 10%. The parameters measured were concentration, fatigue, reaction, nervous tension, physical and mental efficiency, resistance and vitality.Take time out from the study and take regular breaks.Play fun brain games to exercise cognitive skills and boost memory such as word recall games, crosswords or sudoku. There are plenty of memory training apps too! Engaging in regular exercise is highly beneficial. Try getting out in nature to clear the brain fog and replenish your brain with some much needed oxygen, whether it’s a walk in the hills, a bike ride or a run, exercise is extremely important for physical and mental health. Research has established that it is beneficial for the brain and may help memory in people of all ages. For example, one study highlighted that just 15 minutes of moderate exercise on a stationary bike led to improved cognitive performance, including memory. If you’re studying hard right now then hopefully some of these tips will not only help you allay the trepidation and exam nerves but also help you attain the grades you desire with flying colours!
