As we look ahead, this August promises an extraordinary adventure for my son and me. We’re setting off to backpack through Vietnam, pushing our boundaries in exciting ways. From overnight stays in hostels to travelling on overnight trains, we are gearing up for an immersive experience. It feels like I’m having the ‘gap year’ I missed when I jumped straight from school to my first job. More importantly, it’s a chance for my son to see the world from a new perspective and like our cover a chance to reconnect with nature. While we’re away, my husband, Matt, will keep the home fires burning, managing Beartown Voice and caring for our dogs. We will surely miss them dearly. In this month’s Beartown Voice, we’re thrilled to announce our collaboration with the mental health charity, Bridging the Gap, Mind Matters. Mental wellbeing is a cause close to my heart, having personally experienced the challenges of anxiety and depression. This made the decision to support them as our first annual charity an easy one. Please turn to page 6 to learn more about our support for this inspiring charity. I hope this edition of the Beartown Voice brings you joy and that you take advantage of the great services our advertisers provide. 6Introducing, Bridging The Gap...BEARTOWN Voice is a family business and part of a group of four magazines that cover the towns of Middlewich, Sandbach along with the villages of Holmes Chapel, Goostrey, Brereton and Cranage. These magazines all fall under our main business name, Arch Publications. In each edition and across all areas, we strive to support local charities and community organizations by providing them with free or heavily discounted content. If we were to assign a value to these donations on our pages, it would amount to nearly £30,000 in the last 12 months alone. We are incredibly grateful to our advertisers because without their support, we would not be able to provide this assistance to the community. To commemorate this achievement, we have decided to select a nominated charity each year. Our commitment to them is to offer free advertising and content that helps them raise their profile within our distribution areas. In every edition, you will find something related to this chosen charity, whether it is information on how to support them, upcoming events they have planned, or details about the support and services they offer. We are dedicated to making a positive impact in our communities and are thrilled to be able to contribute to the success of local charities and organizations through Beartown Voice. By highlighting their work and sharing their stories, we hope to encourage greater involvement and support from our communities. Our charity for the next 12 months is:FIND OUT MORE Take a look our website and get in touch tosee how you can get involved in this movement: www.btg-mindmatters.orgI would like to share with you the inspiring work of a local charity that is making a tremendous impact on mental health in our community – Bridging The Gap Mind Matters CIOMental health is an issue that affects us all, yet many individuals struggle to find the support they desperately need. BTG Mind Matters is dedicated to bridging this gap by providing accessible and innovative mental health services to those in our community who are struggling.Through their Respite programme they provide talking therapy, and physical therapy as a combination. Empowering individuals to take control of their mental and physical health through coping mechanisms and healthy habits. What sets Bridging the Gap apart is the connection to the community, local professionals supporting local people. We provide a proactive approach enabling individuals to access support as soon as they start to struggle. But they cannot do this important work alone. They rely on the support of our community - individuals, businesses, and organisations – to continue their mission. By working together, we can bridge the gap in mental health care and create a community where everyone has access to the support they need.A massive thank you to Arch Publications who have come on board as a business affiliate supporting this inspiring charity. 1212TODAY we will practice a short body scan, checking in with our bodies which helps to settle the mind, and to notice what physiological sensations and emotions might be present. It’s an easy yet highly effective meditation that helps to bring peace and calm to mind and body.Let’s begin by taking a moment to allow your body to settle into a comfortable position. You may close your eyes or keep them slightly open, averting your gaze downwards to reduce any visual distractions.Lift the spine and then allow your shoulders to soften and to sag down slightly.Begin by taking a full breath in and a long breath out.Now bringing awareness to the top of your body, scan your head, face, neck and shoulders.Noticing any sensations, movements, any places of holding tension or tightness. Now moving down scan your arms and the hands.Sensing the back of the body, the front of the body.Sensing yourself seated.Feeling the contact of your body with the chair or the cushion. Now sensing your upper legs, your lower legs, and the feet.Noticing if there are any particular places that call out for attention.Places where sensations feel most vibrant or dynamic.Scanning to see if there are places where there is a lack of sensations or only very faint sensations. Now sensing the whole body breathing. One complete organism.Finishing with a full deep breath in, and a long breath out.And return to the rest of your day.Mike HollandMind Being YouShort Body Scan MeditationA Daily Integrated 3 Centre PracticeChoose a time during your day to take three deep breaths in and out, each breath to ‘scan’ one area of the body and just observing any areas of tension, tightness or no feeling sensation.Simply be with whatever comes up, observing with a ‘beginners mind’ and accepting without judgement what is there.• 1st breath, scan the head, representing thoughts.• 2nd breath, scan the gut, representing “gut feelings.”• 3rd breath, the heart, representing our values or intentions.

14Let’s talk legal...WHEN a relationship breaks down, most people wish they could wave a magic wand to resolve everything. Instructing a divorce solicitor can help you to navigate reaching an agreement on parenting arrangements for children, financial settlement, and obtaining a final order of divorce.Evolve Family Law doesn’t have a magic wand, but we have introduced a one-lawyer divorce service to be able to help some couples separate and divorce amicably, avoid conflict, and reduce legal expenses. How often have you been told by a friend going through a separation that their lawyer says that they will get to keep the house and the pension, only to be told the same thing by your friend’s ex-partner? Conflict inevitably arises. Leaving it to a judge to decide who gets the house or pension is one option, but it can be an expensive, time-consuming process and involves a stranger deciding your future. With the one lawyer divorce service, the focus is on helping a couple reach an agreement that works for both of them. The lawyer will then prepare paperwork to confirm the agreement, in either a parenting plan to set out the residence and contact arrangements for children, or in a financial court order to record the agreed divorce financial settlement.Experienced family law solicitor Eluned Roberts is specially trained in collaborative law and the one-lawyer divorce process. She is an advocate of one-lawyer divorce for the right couples. She says: ‘The one-lawyer divorce process works by firstly making sure that the service is the best way for you and your partner to sort out the legal implications of your separation. If it isn’t, I will say so and talk about your other options to reach an agreement without having to resort to court proceedings. It is trite to say that honesty is the best policy but that is true of the one-lawyer divorce service, as you need your one divorce lawyer to be upfront with you about whether the process will work for you and you need to be able to trust and honestly communicate with your ex. ‘In many relationship breakdowns, a couple has decided that living together isn’t right for them but they want to do their best for their children, to separate with dignity, or just agree that they don’t want all their savings being spent in court battles. 18In your home...THE Design House by Interior Motives, a local retailer and interior design expert based on the Manor Lane industrial estate, has shared some exciting items they have in stock this summer. One of the trends making a stylish comeback is bouclé furniture, reminiscent of the ‘90s. Bouclé is a textured fabric made from looped yarn, giving it a soft and nubby feel. While bouclé furniture often comes in white or cream shades, don’t worry about potential stains because the fabric has low liquid absorption, making it easy to spot-clean. The bouclé swivel chair is a standout piece that can make a statement in any room. And if you’re not ready for white furniture, it’s available in a range of fabric options to suit your style.Another trend gaining popularity is furniture with textured elements like wicker or rattan. The Design House showcases a stunning sideboard that combines a bold black finish with beautiful natural rattan inlay. This versatile piece not only adds a touch of elegance to your space but also provides practical storage. Whether you want to discreetly store your finest dinnerware or keep your paperwork and everyday essentials organized, this sideboard has got you covered.Last but certainly not least, cushions are a must-have item for adding comfort and style to your home. The Design House offers a wide selection of cushions in various styles, patterns, and colours. Whether you want to freshen up your sofa or add a finishing touch to your bed, their collection has something for everyone. And if you’re looking for something specific, you can explore their extensive pattern books to find the perfect match. With their range of bouclé furniture, textured sideboards, and stylish cushions, The Design House has everything you need to transform your space into a haven of comfort and style this summer. Visit their store on Manor Lane industrial estate and discover the perfect pieces to elevate your home decor.

24Love nature...CHESHIRE creatives Nigel Danson landscape photographer and Allie Pottinger watercolour artist are set to raise your spirits with their joint exhibition this September.‘The Spirit of Luskentyre’ show is a celebration of works inspired by their time on the Isle of Harris’s spectacular Luskentyre beach on the Outer Hebrides. Epic photographer and YouTube sensation Nigel, spent 30 days photographing one beach. Discover his stunning framed works of transient weather conditions from sunrise to sunset. Allie joined Nigel for a week, she is an avid plein air painter. Allie says of her experience “Every sense was involved in creating this work - the taste of the salt on the air. The feeling of wind and sun on your skin, the biting cold whilst sitting on the rocks absorbing the scene, the sound of seabirds, crash of the waves and the distant whirl of a wind turbine. I hope this collection conjures up my experiences, whilst conferring a sense of the sheer delight and serenity of this magical location.”The exhibition is at Clonterbrook Gallery, Trap Road, Swettenham Heath CW12 2LS10-4pm Fri 15th, Sat 16th & Sun 17th Sept 2023.Please note the gallery is up on the first floor. WILL WRITING • WILL TRUSTS • ASSETS TRUSTPOWER OF ATTORNEY • INHERITANCE TAX PLANNINGTelephone 01270 667 912 or visit www.sanctuarytts.comSanctuary Tax & Trust Services Ltd, 41 Lawton Road, Alsager ST7 2AAAs the cost-of-living spirals and more of our children struggle to get a footing on the property ladder it is now more important than ever to plan our family’s inheritance. The team at Sanctuary Tax & Trust explain how many families nd themselves victims of avoidable losses and why simply writing a will does not guarantee our family will inherit as we wish. For the vast majority of people, we spend all our lives working to build up wealth, through property, savings and pensions we look at providing nancial security for our families and when our nal day arrives, we hope these assets will pass to the people we care about the most, partners, children, relatives and friends. Traditionally, people have chosen wills to document their wishes and while writing a will is important, it does not provide any protection for the assets within it.Considerations when planning InheritanceCare Fees – As we live longer the likelihood of needing care becomes greater and under the government’s changes to the social care act should the need for care arise, we could see our asset taken down to just £14,250. The new assessment process will see everybody with property and savings over a combined value of £23,250 being required to pay for their care.Relationship Failure – When passing assets purely through a will we see many leaving their assets to their children but not giving consideration to what would happen if one of their children was to divorce. This can lead to a child seeing half of their inheritance in the hands of an ex-partner and in the event of early bereavement this can lead to grandchildren being disinherited.Inheritance Tax – The current IHT framework can be complex and unknowingly people can leave their children and even grandchildren with an Inheritance tax issue.Probate – The cost of probate as risen dramatically over the last few years, and it can be a lengthy and drawn-out process. On average, with a valid Will, probate will typically take 6 – 12 months to complete, without a Will it may can take up to 2 years. Its Never the Wrong Time To Do The Right Thing – While people appreciate that inheritance planning is important many will delay seeking the correct advice. By putting o arranging our aairs we run the risk of running out of time, or in the event o illness, seeing our options dramatically reduced. Why Sanctuary Tax & Trust Services? With over 20 years of experience in Estate and Inheritance planning we have helped families in the area protect their assets and plan their inheritance in the most cost-eective way. While the individual family’s circumstance may vary, the one constant is that each family aims to provide the maximum amount of inheritance possible without the stress of complexed legal jargon.
26Congleton’s heritage...HOMES are dear to our hearts. And how we live (or lived) is always intriguing. Glance anywhere in centre-town Congleton and notice the sheer amount of terraced housing. Why is there so much of this type? How come they’re called ‘terraces’ anyway? And… what has Italy got to do with it? This is a backstory worth exploring, with a noble heritage attached. Considered very ‘19th century’ it’s hard to think of another style of building that has swept the social scale as much as the terrace house has managed to do. Many, if not most, of us have occupied one at some point. Yet the concept - a unified plan for constructing neat, symmetrical dwellings linked only by side walls - started to become popular way back in the 17th century. An idea brought over from Renaissance Italy, at first these were for polite society, elegantly ranged around smart city squares and gardens. Definitely des res. Move forward to times following the Industrial Revolution. High-density residential was urgently required. Convenience was keyword for supplying workers with low-cost habitations as near as possible to mills and factories, quickly, and of course using up the least space. Simplified versions of terraces were ideal. All this is noticeable here from Congleton’s former textile industry. By this stage too the punitive Glass Tax had been repealed, with glazing available more cheaply. Light entered the terrace from tall rectangular sash windows, front and rear. Rounded doorways were (still are) a feature, sometimes with semi-circular fanlights above, another Italianate touch. Look out locally for examples of traditional variations, from plainest - to wealthier, adorned with big glassy bay windows. Some dwellings converted into retail, or rows were built with corner pubs or shops, now iconic.Yes, but the term itself? How on earth did that arise? First namesake was Adelphi Terrace in London by the Strand. Built by famed Scottish architectural brothers John and Robert Adam around 1770, (cleverly referenced: ‘Adelphi’ is Greek for ‘brothers’) this was something special – although the new development was daringly sited on very marshy ground! A close-set line of 24 prestigious houses was given an adjacent, level paved area. Residents could stroll in comfort to enjoy views of the river Thames on their terraced walkway. Very appealing. When later architects began designing urban housing projects… the ‘terrace’ association stuck. So, why does it matter? Not only is it fun to spot design details as clues to a long lineage, it tells us a little bit more about ourselves – and that’s always interesting!Julie Elizabeth Smalley

30Man about town...IT’S August and long, lazy holidays in far flung destinations are at the top of many people’s agendas. If you’re planning a break away from Congleton where would you go? There are the sun kissed beaches of the Canary Islands. Maybe France and the sweeping vineyards of the Loire Valley. What about Congleton? Clearly, our fabulous little town has much to offer a curious tourist. But wanderlust consumed me and decided to find out if there were any Congletons elsewhere in the world. And I found three! Questions is, are they worth a visit?Kentucky must have been a popular destination for our adventurous forebears as there are two settlements in the state named in honour of our ancient town. One of them is in Lee County. It takes its name from the Confederate General, Robert E. Lee so there’s history. It lies close to the Daniel Boone National Forest in an area of rugged hills and dense forests. It sounds perfect for the trekker. But it’s not without its problems. According to the US Government, Lee County is amongst the poorest in the entire country with lower than average incomes and poorer life expectancy than elsewhere. Its coal mining history probably accounts for much of the problem. But the area’s in the middle of a huge rejuvenation so there’s a reason for optimism. There’s another Kentucky Congleton. This one’s in McLean County. If you’re looking forward to a beer when you get there - forget it. It’s widely claimed our town once held the record for most pubs per head of population whereas the McLean County Congleton is dry. Prohibition prevails. But we all know what that means - every shed, barn, garage and privy will have an illegal whiskey still bubbling away. There’s history here too from the American Civil War to nationally important archaeological sites dating back thousands of years to a time before the arrival of our ancestors. If you visit either you might struggle to send a “Wish You Were Here” postcard - both lost their post offices decades ago.For the third Congleton on this list I need to whizz you to the other side of the world. Congleton is a parish in Queensland, Australia. It’s not quite the middle of nowhere but you can see if from there. Even the tentacles of a famous global mapping service haven’t yet managed to provide a street view. Congleton QL comprises one main road bisecting an Aboriginal Australian reserve. It connects the small town of Pormpuraaw with the outside world. It’s a hilly landscape covered in scrub. There are many azure blue, rectangular reservoirs. They’re somewhat reminiscent of the “blue lagoon” near Buxton so I doubt they’re suitable for swimming. There’s a guest house and airport so it is accessible for the adventurous tram seller who’s gagging to scratch Cape York from their bucket list.Full disclosure - I haven’t actually visited any of the colonial Congletons in person. Thanks to the marvels of modern digital technology I didn’t need to. But if I do you’ll forgive me for not being able to send a postcard.Mark Edwardson

32Them bones, them bones...A bright and blustery Sunday so I thought I’d get some fresh air and take myself off for a brisk walk. My phone helpfully tells me that I’ve walked 3.6 miles. Walking always makes me feel rejuvenated, especially when I can get out into the countryside. It does me good on so many levels - reduces stress, lifts my mood and is also good for my bones!Following a bone density scan a while ago I was told that my T-Score was at the lower end of normal. Nothing to worry about apparently, but to avoid osteopenia leading to osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become weak and brittle, I need to look after my bone health. There are many factors at play here as bone health is affected by age where bones become weaker, sex – women have less bone density than men, also your size race and family history. Us ladies also take a hit in menopause with the drop in oestrogen levels leading to bone loss. It seems that everything is against us but there are many things we can do to protect our bones and not just as we age but throughout our lives.1. Eat lots of vegetables – one of the best sources of vitamin C which stimulates the production of bone forming cells.2. Weight-bearing or high-impact exercise such as walking, running and playing sports helps to build and maintain strong bones. Include resistance exercises such as pushups, weights and resistance bands. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise per day.3. Eat calcium-rich foods – the most important mineral for bone structure and strength. Spreading your intake throughout the day will optimise absorption.4. Vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium and we get this from exposure to the sun and some foods such as fatty fish, eggs and cheese. By getting out in the sunshine for your exercise you get a double helping of bone nourishment!5. Maintain a healthy weight – being too heavy or too thin acts negatively on bone health but a steady weight can help to preserve bone density.6. Cut down on sugar – as it prevents the body from taking in enough calcium and other important nutrients from your diet.7. Quit smoking and limit alcohol intake – these harmful chemicals cause bones to be frailer and to break more easily. There is so much you can do to maintain healthy bones and reflexology can also play a valuable part because it increases blood and lymphatic circulation. Our bones need a good blood supply, and lymph flow removes waste and reduces inflammation. By working the reflexes of the digestive system we can also improve the processing efficiency of the vitamins and minerals required from our food. Unfortunately, reflexology will not get rid of osteoporosis, but if used alongside healthy diet and plenty of exercise, it can help to keep your bone health in good shape and prevent further problems in the future.Jan Johnson Reflexology

34Days Out & Meals Out...I have achieved something I didn’t think I could do. I climbed all the way up to the canopy of a massive Turkey Oak Tree reaching 17.5 meters high. It was hard work, but so much fun getting up there, and weirdly, that oak felt like the strongest thing in the world while I did it. I put myself and my girls’ safety in the hands of that tree and trusted nature completely.I wasn’t just climbing the branches freestyle; I was at Arley Hall and in the safe, watchful eyes of the Discover Tree Climbing team. With Discover Tree Climbing, climbers use the Double Rope Technique, which is a safe method used by tree surgeons and tree climbers. Climbers wear a harness and are attached to a climbing line, which is secured to a strong branch. Using a system of friction knots, the climber uses the power in their legs to propel themselves up the rope and into the tree.We pre-booked, arriving 15 minutes early to sign the waiver and to have our harnesses fitted before we started our 45-minute session. We were shown how to work the ropes to climb and taught about the safety measures. We felt very reassured by Terry and were ready to climb. There were three ropes hanging down together with a semi-clear path up to the top, so we got attached to these so we could climb next to each other. My eldest, aged 11, went flying up. She reached the first big branch and was given instructions to try and stand on it. She really enjoyed this bit as she then had to stand without holding on, then do a yoga pose and finally do the leap of faith and step off the branch. My youngest, who is 8, went a bit slower next to me, but she soon got into the rhythm and was doing so well pulling herself up. Once we got to the branch, we also had a go at standing on it. This was such a fun thing to do and really improved our confidence with climbing the rest of the way.We all carried on climbing to the top. It did take most of the session to get up as we stopped to rest and take in the views a few times. Once you have reached the top, you can celebrate your achievement by ringing the bell. To come down, you pull down on the top knot, and this slowly lowers you down to the ground. We really enjoyed our session and would love to have another go. As we went in June, the tree was in full leaf, so it would be interesting to go again in autumn when there are fewer leaves and more of a view.Tree climbing allows children to develop physical and mental skills, gain confidence, develop their team-building skills, all at the same time as having fun.Discover Tree Climbing can provide events for schools and youth groups, and it would make a fantastic and unique Birthday Party. They can easily set up a private session for up to 12 climbers, and then you can simply have a picnic under the tree afterwards.Discovery Tree Climbing does sessions at both Arley Hall & Gardens and Capesthorne Hall in Cheshire.
