6It’s more than three years since I worked for the BBC as a TV presenter and producer. Even now I get asked whether I miss the job.Honestly, the answer is “yes”…to a point. It was an exciting way to earn a living and a privilege to work for an organisation with a deservedly ne reputation around the world. For others “being on the telly” is rarer and probably much more exciting as a result. Jo Jeries from Congleton is one of those people.Regular readers might recall Jo has a houseful of intricate Lego models of titanic proportions. Literally. One of her creations is a ve foot long creation of the ill-fated ocean liner. She’s also a TV star in the making. Her rst shot at fame was a recent appearance on ITV’s “The Chase”. Still almost breathless with excitement Jo described the moment Bradley Walsh introduced her. “It was a whirlwind! And it was a bit of a uke I was on there too.”Good fortune or luck always play their part in the fun-packed world of light entertainment. And sometimes Dutch courage does too. “Well, we’d had a couple of glasses of wine on a Friday night and I thought I’m going to go for that,” she chuckled. “I can do better than them.”Jo didn’t hear anything for about a year. Then the ‘phoine rang and ITV oered her a video interview. She admitted, “I’d totally forgotten I’d applied!”Jo is very natural in front of the camera. She’s bright, bubbly and crucially very personable. Believe me, there’s nothing worse in TV-land than a guest with nothing to say. You might struggle to Man About TownMark Edwardsonbelieve someone who’ll subject themselves to the cameras, the relentless schedule, the heavy make-up and, most terrifyingly, the studio oor manager would be keen on being thrown into a competitive bear pit only to be quizzed on their brain power. I found this curious but Jo’s actually a bit shy, “I’m not the most condent of people, though. I am the person who is least likely to stand up in a room full of people and speak. I just thought I’d start doing more things and it happened!”Taking that in to account did Jo enjoy the limelight, the pan stick and being mercilessly pushed around? “I absolutely loved it,” she told me with a smile wider than Bingo’s out of the Banana Splits. “I was nervous. But seeing how everything was put together was an amazing experience”.Jo is glowing about her fellow team-mates and the show’s host, the national treasure that is Bradley Walsh.Jo’s fondest memories are of her opponent, “The Dark Destroyer”. She revealed, “All the Chasers have an act. They have to be big characters otherwise what’s the point? Nobody would be intimidated by them.” So, was she afraid of barrister, Shaun Wallace? Jo bust out laughing. “It sounds awful but I must admit I wasn’t!”What did Jo say about being a bit shy? Look out for her on forthcoming quiz shows - she’d got a taste for it.

10Congleton Communicare was founded in 1984 by Frances Swindells, wife of the Minister at Antrobus Street United Reformed Church, under the auspices of Congleton’s Council of Churches. At our AGM in February, we celebrated 40 years of service to the local community.Run entirely by volunteers, its original purpose was to assist the inrm by providing transport for shopping and collecting prescriptions. The service was organised by a small committee, including Frances as Coordinator, Joan Kirkham as Secretary, one local doctor, and two ministers. Requests for assistance were made through Congleton Information Centre, with volunteer drivers using their own cars.By 1989, Communicare became an independent organisation, focusing on providing transport to medical appointments for elderly, inrm, or disabled Congleton residents who are unable to use their own or public transport. In the 1990s, Frances Swindells returned as Coordinator, directly receiving phone requests from clients and allocating journeys to a growing team of drivers. Despite her failing eyesight by 2009, she continued to manage with the help of a rota of committee members acting as scribes. When Frances could no longer manage, a Coordinator Team took over, a method that still operates today. Frances nally resigned in 2017 and was presented with a long-service award—a talking watch to help with her eyesight loss.At February’s 40th Anniversary AGM celebration, Chairman Janet Eaton proposed a toast to Sandra White, who joined Communicare in 1998 as a driver and became Secretary in 2000. Sandra’s role included interviewing prospective new drivers, explaining journey allocations, and managing clerical duties. After 23 years of continuous service, Sandra decided to retire, and we wish her a happy retirement. We are pleased she will remain a valuable member of the service.Congleton Communicare became a Registered Charity in November 2000, with the committee appointed as Trustees to oversee its activities. It remains entirely volunteer-run, with roles including Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, the Coordinator Team, and the drivers. The service handles up to 100 journey requests per week, coordinating these with drivers’ availability. The Communicare service is limited to Congleton Borough residents and is for medical appointments only. However, there is no geographical restriction on the destination. Journeys are mainly to hospitals and clinics within a 10-mile radius, but requests for longer trips, such as to Manchester, Wigan, Liverpool, Oswestry, or Birmingham, are common. Volunteer drivers use their own cars and receive a generous mileage allowance. We welcome new drivers or Coordinators to help cater to more clients each week. If you are interested in either role, please call 01260 270883 to speak to a Coordinator and nd out more.40 Years of ServicebyCongleton Communicare

14So… which particular place is described? Mid-1800’s this area was ‘a township and populous village three-quarters of a mile north-east-by-north from Congleton, of which it forms a suburb’. Fairly recently it had gained a ‘handsome, stone structure’ of a church, St John’s, in 1840. Another gem was the country seat of Samuel Pearson Esquire, Justice of the Peace - ‘a neat mansion, delightfully situated among picturesque scenery’.Sounds appealing. Of course, it’s Buglawton, around the year 1857. Population then was only slightly over 2000. William Tatton Egerton, esquire, was Lord of the Manor. That neat mansion? Buglawton Hall, a largely 18th century building but re-designed before and after. Perhaps of more material signicance however, besides the one mill for cotton spinning, were several more for the all-important ‘silk throwing’, that is processing long bre into textiles. Congleton, along with Maccleseld and Stockport, formed the hub of the English silk industry.Still, though, something bugs the landscape detective about this place. And it’s all about the name. Up until the late 13th century this quiet spot was known simply as Lautune, often spelled Lauton. Combined in the place-name are two Old English word-elements: hlaw meaning mound, hill or tumulus, maybe a burial site, and tun meaning a settlement, of really any size from farm to village. Then, for some reason, Buggelauton became the permanently documented form.Congleton’s HeritageHistory article byJulie Elizabeth Smalley‘Bugge/bogge’ is especially interesting. It dates from the Middle English period of our language (Norman Conquest to c. 1500) and meant a spectre or ‘boggart’… something supernatural, and distinctly frightening! Related was the word hobgoblin, another rather unwelcome character with prankster tendencies. Think of the expression ‘bogeyman’ used nowadays. Many versions of the updated place- name circulated, including Bugleton in 1487, Buklawton in 1527, and even Bugland (1547). How about, in 1567, Burglawtone alias Burglaughtone? Too much! Why on earth did ‘bugge’ get introduced anyway? Whatever happened, the ax was likely applied to distinguish between here and another Lawton further to the south. Two Lawtons in the parish of Astbury must have been confusing. By 1331 outlying Church Laughton, ‘hill-village with a church’ had already come into use. That area is notable for its series of barrows – raised burial sites, or mounds – dating back thousands of years to the Bronze Age. The local landscape just gets larger, older, more complex… and more mysterious!Today the same ‘populous village’ is very much part of urban Congleton rather than rural hamlet. Frustratingly, we might never know what occurrence prompted its intriguing place-name addition. And that’s denitely a bugbear!

30Elizabeth’s Group is very proud of its statue “Our Elizabeth” and I can’t tell you how good it feels to walk down Bridge Street and see her standing there in all her glory. We worked very hard for four years to raise the money to commission Hazel Reeves to sculpt our wonderful suragist and Hazel had already produced the amazing Emmeline Pankhurst statue that stands in St Peter’s Square in Manchester City Centre. You can imagine how very pleased I was to be asked to join with a group of women from Crewe who have a similar project for a statue of Ada Neald Chew, Elizabeth’s cornerby Susan Munro, ChairElizabeth’s Groupand that they have asked Hazel Reeves to be the sculptor for the project. There are so few statues of named women in the UK and it is important that a female sculptor is used, and we are so honoured to have such a high calibre artist. Ada’s statue will make a chain of Reeves sculptures, all of strong women, across the Northwest of England; it’s great that, thanks to Elizabeth’s Group, Congleton is included.Ada Neald was a factory lass, who worked in Crompton’s sewing factory in Crewe and wrote a series of anonymous letters to the Crewe Chronicle whistle-blowing the terrible conditions and low wages that the factory girls were enduring. One of her famous lines is, “A living wage? Ours is a lingering, dying wage; we eat, we sleep, we work.” She signed her letters “A Crewe Factory Girl”. Ada later became active with the Burnley Clarion Van and toured the North speaking to women and girls and spreading her socialist ideals with the Independent Labour Party. She also took part in the famous Women’s Pilgrimage, which called into Congleton to see Elizabeth in 1913.I am thrilled and excited to be a trustee for the Statue for Ada Campaign, and I’m looking forward to the hard work ahead.Onwards and upwards.

32This month, we focus on one of the many holistic therapies we oer at Bare Health: Shiatsu. What is Shiatsu? Shiatsu is a traditional hands-on Japanese healing therapy rooted in ancient Chinese medicine. It combines acupressure, massage, and gentle stretching to promote physical and emotional balance. The word “Shiatsu” means “nger pressure” in Japanese. Developed in the early 20th century by Tokujiro Namikoshi, Shiatsu has evolved to integrate aspects of Western anatomy and physiology, bridging Eastern and Western healing traditions. At its core, Shiatsu is based on the concept of Qi (or Chi), the vital life force that ows through the body’s meridians. Practitioners use their thumbs, ngers, palms, elbows, and sometimes knees to apply pressure along these meridians, aiming to unblock and balance the Qi ow. Techniques include pressing, tapping, and stretching, performed on a futon on the oor, on a massage table, or while seated with the recipient fully clothed. The position and techniques are adapted to the individual’s mobility, symptoms, and general health.Health Benets: A Holistic Approach Shiatsu is renowned for its wide range of health benets:Mental Health: Alleviates stress, anxiety, depression, and tension, promoting relaxation and mental clarity.Physical Health: May help with chronic pain conditions, such as back pain, headaches, and joint stiness. Supports the immune system, enhances circulation, and improves digestive functions. It is particularly benecial for women experiencing menstruation diculties and menopause.Holistic Healing: Shiatsu’s inclusive approach looks at the whole person, not just their symptoms, leading to profound healing by addressing underlying issues that impact well-being. Academic research indicates that Shiatsu is safe and can reduce a wide range of symptoms, improving quality of life. The essence of Shiatsu is touch. It is a very deep, nurturing touch that triggers the self-healing process in the receiver. When a Shiatsu practitioner connects with an individual at a deep level, the receiver begins to feel safe and relaxes. This helps slow down the nervous system, allowing the individual to rest and begin the journey of self-healing and self-awareness.Shiatsu touch, in its stillness, depth, and gentle compassion, supports the whole person. The presence of the practitioner as a witness to this process helps the receiver become their own witness, encouraging them to take care of themselves from a kinder and more relaxed place.Discover the transformative power of Shiatsu at Bare Health with Anne Tanner, Shiatsu Practitioner, is skilled and dedicated to helping you achieve physical and emotional balance through this ancient yet modern healing therapy.Hands on healingbyBare HealthAlways consult your GP or healthcare professional if on prescribed medication or undergoing any form of medical treatment.

36had one daughter and was informed that her chances of conceiving after chemotherapy were only 1%. However, in 2017, following some health concerns, she was asked to undergo a CT scan. Before the scan, she took a pregnancy test, which revealed astonishing news: Sarah was pregnant with her son, Monty. This miraculous event was followed by the birth of her daughter, Poppie. During her breast cancer journey, Sarah met many individuals who provided immense inspiration and support. She always cherished the idea of recognising these remarkable people for their often unnoticed contributions. Having seen awards for business and sport, she realised there was nothing similar for those in the breast cancer community. This dream of honouring those unsung heroes led her to create the Buttery Breast Cancer Awards.Of course, this vision didn’t materialise overnight. Sarah meticulously developed her concept from the ground up, beginning with the name “The Buttery Awards.” She explains, “A buttery is delicate but has the strength and resilience to break through its chrysalis after being in darkness for a period of time, never giving up hope and believing it can emerge as a beautiful buttery in a new world.”On September 20th, 2024, the 2nd Buttery Breast Cancer Awards will be held at Vale Royal Abbey. I had the privilege of speaking with the inspiring Sarah Pickles, the visionary behind this remarkable event, to learn about her journey and the motivation for launching the ceremony in 2023.Sarah’s story is one of resilience and hope. In 2014, she was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer, embarking on a challenging treatment journey that included chemotherapy and a double mastectomy with reconstruction. At the time, she already Katy meets... Buttery Breast Cancer Awardsby Katy O’ReganThe buttery theme permeates the entire event, from the branding to the gift each winner receives: a beautiful living buttery ready to be released into their own gardens when they get home. The awards at the event have all been carefully considered. From women who are bravely navigating their own cancer journeys to those supporting others with breast cancer, Sarah has witnessed strength, hope, and connection on an extraordinary level.Sarah wanted to acknowledge the women who ourished, emerging with a renewed sense of purpose and achievement, harnessing the opportunity to transcend from their old selves and create new beginnings. Women who, despite their own challenges, support others through treatment, nding ways to help them shine or creating products, services, and businesses to make the experience easier for other breast cancer women.Sarah also recognises the many others playing vital roles in making a dierence to someone with breast cancer and their long road to wellbeing. From nurses, doctors, and support sta to neighbours, friends, and family, there is often an army of people lifting you up through little acts of kindness. She also has awards for those who provide a listening ear, a reassuring hug or note, giggles and tears over a cup of tea, a meal for the family on treatment day, help with the school run when you have an appointment, a baked cake left on the doorstep for the disturbed nights ahead, a fundraiser in your name—the list is endless. All are worthy of recognition, yet often go unnoticed by everyone else.A full list of the awards and how to nominate are on her website. You can also book tickets for the event or, if you are a business, perhaps sponsor something on the night.Sarah is also an accomplished author. She wrote a book about her own journey with the aim to help others going through the same. Sarah remembers how she had to learn quickly when she was diagnosed and hopes her experience will make it a little easier for someone in the same situation. Her book, The Shock Factor: Sarah’s Story - Beating Breast Cancer One Day at a Time, is also available to order on her website. The Buttery Awards are going to be a night of fun, entertainment, lovely food, Celebration, Recognition and inspiring stories, plus an opportunity to raise money for some vital breast cancer charities. The 2024 chosen charity is Prevent Breast Cancer, and they hope to beat the amount they raised last year, which was a huge £7,513.88. Sarah is a very busy lady. Not only does she have three children to look after, she also works most days at Celeste, a coee and cocktail bar in Holmes Chapel and she has recently set up her own breast cancer charity called ‘Beating Breast Cancer with Success’. Plus, she won’t rest after this year’s awards because next year’s event looks like it will be even bigger as she already has the venue booked: Chester Racecourse!I wish her all the best for The Buttery Awards 2024. I am sure the event will be a success and get bigger each year. For tickets, award nominations, or to nd out how to be a sponsor or donate an auction prize, go to sarahepickles.uk.

39WILL WRITING • WILL TRUSTS • ASSETS TRUSTPOWER OF ATTORNEY • INHERITANCE TAX PLANNINGTelephone 01270 667 912 or visit www.sanctuarytts.comSanctuary Tax & Trust Services Ltd, 41 Lawton Road, Alsager ST7 2AAAs the cost-of-living spirals and more of our children struggle to get a footing on the property ladder it is now more important than ever to plan our family’s inheritance. The team at Sanctuary Tax & Trust explain how many families nd themselves victims of avoidable losses and why simply writing a will does not guarantee our family will inherit as we wish. For the vast majority of people, we spend all our lives working to build up wealth, through property, savings and pensions we look at providing nancial security for our families and when our nal day arrives, we hope these assets will pass to the people we care about the most, partners, children, relatives and friends. Traditionally, people have chosen wills to document their wishes and while writing a will is important, it does not provide any protection for the assets within it.Considerations when planning InheritanceCare Fees – As we live longer the likelihood of needing care becomes greater and under the government’s changes to the social care act should the need for care arise, we could see our asset taken down to just £14,250. The new assessment process will see everybody with property and savings over a combined value of £23,250 being required to pay for their care.Relationship Failure – When passing assets purely through a will we see many leaving their assets to their children but not giving consideration to what would happen if one of their children was to divorce. This can lead to a child seeing half of their inheritance in the hands of an ex-partner and in the event of early bereavement this can lead to grandchildren being disinherited.Inheritance Tax – The current IHT framework can be complex and unknowingly people can leave their children and even grandchildren with an Inheritance tax issue.Probate – The cost of probate has risen dramatically over the last few years, and it can be a lengthy and drawn-out process. On average, with a valid Will, probate will typically take 6 – 12 months to complete, without a Will it may take up to 2 years. It’s Never the Wrong Time To Do The Right Thing – While people appreciate that inheritance planning is important many will delay seeking the correct advice. By putting o arranging our aairs we run the risk of running out of time, or in the event of illness, seeing our options dramatically reduced. Why Sanctuary Tax & Trust Services? With over 20 years of experience in Estate and Inheritance planning we have helped families in the area protect their assets and plan their inheritance in the most cost-eective way. While the individual family’s circumstance may vary, the one constant is that each family aims to provide the maximum amount of inheritance possible without the stress of complex legal jargon.
