This may be a strange month as we wind down to Christmas; however, it is certainly going to be a busy month. We have Bonfire Night, and it’s great to see the annual event back on at Congleton Park. Remembrance Parade also returns this year, organised by the Congleton branch of The Royal British Legion with support from the Town Council; this will take place on Sunday 14th November. You can support the parade as it marches from West Street car park, along West Street to Swan Bank, through the pedestrian area, High Street, Market Square and Bank Street before reaching the cenotaph on Lawton Street.Other dates of note this month include World Kindness Day on the 13th, Road Safety Week from the 15th to the 21st, and on the 21st it is also World Television Day and World Hello day – on this day I will be slumped on my sofa, saying hello to everyone on the TV.Finally, I want to mention the reason why we have changed our paper. We’ve been hit by spiralling material costs over the last six months: paper, inks, transport and energy prices have all increased. Therefore, instead of putting up our costs to the businesses who support us, we have changed our paper stock. The beating heart of Beartown Voice is still the same inside with a bumper edition. We have some great articles with tips and advice on our winter wellness, helping our dogs deal with the change in seasons, ten Christmas cheer events in Congleton to look forward to and I meet Charlotte, creator of HerSpace that is promoting friendships through events and get-togethers.So grab yourself a cup of tea, put your feet up and enjoy...Ka x Love paper, please recycle after reading

6Over the last month Autumn has truly set in. Misty, cooler mornings, jewelled cobwebs all around and fallen leaves blanket the ground. Those leaves that remain put on a fiery show of breathtaking beauty. I love this time of seasonal change, as nature prepares itself once more for hibernation and the dark winter months ahead. Conserving its nutrients and it’s energy until spring arrives once more.Observing these seasonal changes in nature always gets me pondering. Humans are a part of nature and yet, we have become so far removed from it. Do we prepare ourselves in the same way as nature for the winter months ahead? Cold and Flu season has already descended and naturally, it is the time of year where many become susceptible to ill health. Our ability to ward off colds and flu is certainly dependent on how robust our immunity is. The good news is we can all take steps to support our natural immunity.Vitamin D supplementation is highly recommended with a recent expert panel from Public Health England (PHE), NICE and the Scientific Advisory Committee for Nutrition (SACN) supporting current government advice for everyone to take a supplement of Vitamin D throughout Autumn and Winter.Consuming a greater variety of immune enhancing foods is also hugely beneficial. Mushrooms may not seem the obvious choice for keeping immunity strong, many of you probably add them to your dishes at home without even giving thought to their health benefits. However, numerous clinical studies have proved medicinal Mushrooms can benefit multiple systems in our bodies.Mushrooms have been identified as containing high levels of Beta Glucans – which have been found to ‘prime’ the immune system ensuring that it is ready to respond to threats from viruses and other invaders. Certain types of mushroom, such as reishi, shiitake and maitake are especially rich in Beta glucans. So a daily serving of these could be a worthy addition to a Winter wellness plan. Mushrooms are also a source of vitamin D. Double bonus! They contain a precursor to vitamin D which is converted to an active form when exposed to UV radiation. So during the Summer months when UV light is at its greatest you could pop your mushrooms on a windowsill for a couple of hours in midday sun for a plant based source of vitamin D. However, if this seems like an awful lot of effort or like me, you don’t like mushrooms, a convenient and effective way to access these immune supporting benefits is to take a good quality medicinal mushroom supplement which contains a mix of reishi, maitake and shiitake.Other foods that have been shown to support healthy immunity are garlic, turmeric, honey, elderberries (in the form of a syrup or supplement), and blackseed oil which have been traditionally used for their anti viral and anti oxidant and anti viral properties. Pine needle tea also has historic use in treating respiratory and cardiovascular ailments, and possesses high antioxidant levels. In fact pine needles contain 4-5 times more vitamin C than orange juice and are a natural source of suramin, a powerful anti viral.Vitamin C and Zinc are additional supplements to add in to your Winter Wellness Kit. For those of you who have a good balanced diet with lots of fruit and vegetables and manage to get more than 5 portions daily including a variety of colourful foods such as blackcurrants, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, oranges, camu camu, thyme, kale, lemons for vitamin c and seeds, (particularly pumpkin seeds), nuts, oysters, meat, legumes and wholegrains are all zinc rich foods you are already supporting your diet with a variety of immune supporting nutrients. For those of you falling short of these essential nutrients then supplementation may be a wise choice. So this autumn maybe it’s time to give yourself a health and wellness MOT and a service. Your car gets it regularly. Why not your body? Bare HealthWinter wellness...

We’ve all had welcome visitors and with the wear and tear they may not be looking their best. As we head in to the colder months we often get asked, ‘can you clean carpets in autumn/winter?’ The answer yes. In fact, the colder months are perfect to give your carpets a new lease of life. Firstly, you will have a faster drying rate. During winter, it is only cold outside but very warm inside. You typically have your heating on and, consequently, this helps to dry the freshly cleaned carpet faster. Secondly, allergens and harmful organisms tend to build up in cold temperatures making your carpet a bug zone. Cleaning your carpet during winter, will keep them nasties at bay. And finally, the cold season typically means you spend more time in the house. This is when the odd stain, that you just by-pass in summer, becomes a real annoyance. So why not use this time to get those annoying stains out the way or just give them a refresh ready for your guests arriving at Christmas.Gareth, Carpet Services CongletonCarpet cleaning tips...

1414I was watching the weather forecast earlier today when the presenter highlighted the fact that we have lost around an hour of daylight over the last month. With days becoming shorter, and the evenings becoming darker much earlier, my thoughts have turned to thinking about how to prepare our dogs for the onset of those dark winter days and nights. The change in daylight hours can affect a dog’s behaviour and physiology. Our dogs are creatures of habit and have specific behaviour patterns relating to the time of day, so, when the days become shorter and the clocks change, dogs can find that their normal daily routine is disrupted – making them feel anxious or frustrated. Dogs normally wake up when the sun rises and sleep after sunset, but in the winter months we often start our days in the dark and stay awake long after the sun has gone down. This means our dogs must adjust to a change in the timing of walks, meals and our different working routines. So how can you help? Try to keep the timing of all your dog’s important activities the same. Remember, your dog has no idea that the clocks have gone back and will still expect things to happen at the same time. He will not understand that the clock says 7am when his time clock says it is 8am and he should be having his breakfast! By changing feed and walk times by 10 minutes a day, over a week, your dog will adapt to the new time zone without any difficulties. It is important that both you and your dog stay safe when out in the cold and the dark. Make sure your dog is visible – no matter how well trained you may think he is. Although dogs can see better than humans in the dark, objects may seem unfamiliar and your dog may be unpredictable in his responses and could run away. People dress differently in the cold – big jackets, scarves, hats, earmuffs – and this can make a person look completely unusual and unfamiliar to your dog. Never let your dog run free if you cannot see where he is or what he is doing. To help keep your dog safe there are lots of good high viz items for dogs: flashing collars, reflective jackets and leads. Make sure your dog is accustomed to wearing these before the dark nights set in.Don’t forget that your dog can also feel the cold. Small breeds and short coated dogs may need to wear a water-resistant jacket to keep them warm. Don’t let your dog eat snow as it will rapidly reduce body temperature and it could also be hiding a broken bottle or other hazard. Remember the dangers of frozen water: a dog will not be able to differentiate between this and frozen, solid ground and may fall through the ice. Please also be aware that grit used on the roads contains antifreeze, which is poisonous and can irritate your dog’s paws, so make sure you wash it off after every walk. Finally, if the weather is so awful that you can’t take your dog out for a walk, devise some games to play in the house to keep your dog active and mentally stimulated. Do some trick training, hide toys and food around the house for your dog to search for, get some activity toys for your dog to use, play retrieve games. The list is endless and both you and your dog will enjoy these new activities during those cold winter days.Helen OwensOscar Pet FoodsAutumn tips for your dogs...

16Rising awareness meditation. Walking on a beautiful Autumn morning, the landscape shrouded in mist and waking…Attention turning to my breath…The chill of the morning air brushing my skin and hair…Sounds are muffled as if in cotton wool…Sun beginning to shine through clouds and mist…Beginning of a fragile rainbow coming into view…Colours pale and ethereal, created in a place not ours…Trees adorned with leaves of a myriad of hues, hanging on…Sun breaking through more strongly, lighting the world with its warming, glow…Illuminating the shimmering parade of leaves - reds, oranges, gold, auburn, ochre and colours not known…A leaf falls and catches my eye and my attention strays from the breath and observes…The leaf drifting slowly this way and that way, towards the earth and my attention watches in awe it’s gentle, graceful descent…My attention drawn to another falling leaf and then another and another and I look slowly around…A shimmering shower of twirling, drifting leaves, moving on the warming air but always down and my attention is drawn to something else…As the leaves rain gently down, I notice my awareness of my breath slowly expanding as if it too is waking…My awareness of my thoughts, feelings and emotions begins to grow…Slowly and then with more grace, it expands even more, and I become aware of my body…Walking, moving, observing and breathing…My awareness gathers pace and I notice more around me…My awareness soars and expands above, around and beneath me…I see things that have been unseen for so long…I hear sounds unheard for so long and some even unknown…I smell scents and swirling fragrances of the earth and I breathe them in deeply…I open my mouth and I taste the Autumn air and the world…I notice everything as if in dream and embrace my still growing awareness…Feeling almost dizzy with it all…Experiencing it all as if for the first time and my breath reminds me that it’s still there…I pause and stop…Letting it all soak into my body and senses…I feel a connection not felt for so long…A connection to every thing…And the leaves continue their graceful dance…I am finally aware of peace.Mike HollandMind Being YouFalling leaves...

20As part of their consultation, I ask my clients this question as it can be a factor in their overall health. I also advise drinking water post treatment, as this aids the body in processing the therapeutic effects of reflexology.Everyone knows we need water to survive, but even mild dehydration can impact on our physical and mental health. It can sometimes feel like a chore to drink enough, especially when we are busy, so think of it as a nutrient that your body needs. The NHS recommends 6-8 cups/glasses of fluid per day but this can include tea, coffee and other low-sugar drinks. An adult human is 60% water and we lose fluid continuously from evaporation, breathing, and bodily waste. Fluid loss is heightened in warmer weather, during strenuous exercise and in older adults whose sense of thirst may be reduced. It is essential to replace this water to maintain good health.8 benefits of drinking water:Skin – Dehydrated skin can be flaky, dry and tight with less elasticity. Drinking more water keeps skin looking younger, fresher and healthy.Headaches – Dehydration is a common cause of headaches and migraines.Mental Energy – Dehydration affects cognitive performance and negatively impacts our memory, mood and heightens anxiety.Physical Energy – Water (sweat) keeps you cool as you exercise. Dehydrated cells can result in muscle fatigue, loss of physical performance and longer recovery times.Kidney Health – Water helps the kidneys to cleanse the body of toxins and reduce the risk of kidney stones.Lubricates Joints – Joint cartilage which consists of 70% water and synovial fluid cushion the joints. Dehydration leads to less lubrication and the development of pain.Digestion – Water keeps the food moving and if the body is dehydrated this movement slows, causing pain and constipation. Lack of water may also lead to acid reflux, stomach ulcers, bloating and bad breath.Weight Loss – Drinking water before meals makes you feel fuller so you eat less.Lack of time and motivation can thwart our good intentions to stay hydrated. Why not set a reminder on your phone and keep a water bottle with you? Drink a glass of water before each meal or at set times that fit in with your working day. If you dislike the taste of plain water then adding a flavour may help you to drink more. However you stay hydrated, better health is sure to be your reward.Cheers!Jan JohnsonJan Johnson ReflexologyBenefits of drinking water...How much water do you drink daily?

There will be Christmas music, Santa, the lantern parade, a limited number of charity stalls and festive food and drink from 4pm – 7pm. Santa and his helpers will turn on the lights at 6.30pm. A smaller stage and lack of the funfair will mean more room for everyone to see the lights. 2Return of Congleton’s Touring Santa – the small local charity which took over the Santa Street visits when Congleton Round Table folded in 2015 will be back with their magical Santa tour from Sunday 28th November until Sunday 19th December. You will be able to find out their routes and timings at www.congletonsanta.org.uk. All donations support local charities and organisations.3Free Parking – people coming into town for some Christmas gifts, treats or cheer will be able to take advantage of free parking in Princess Street (near the Market), Back Park Street (behind Lawton Street) and Fairground Car Parks (library) on the 4th, 11th and 18th December after 10am and on all car parks on the Sundays when many shops are open. This will allow you to linger in our friendly town without worrying about racing back to your car.4Toy Appeal - Last year local people were incredibly generous donating more than 600 toys for local children whose families were less able to afford toys. This year people still need our help and Congleton Town Council, Boots Barn Road and Plus Dane are supporting the Chronicle and NSPCC Toy Appeal. New toys can be dropped at the Town Hall or Boots Barn Road from 15thNovember until 19th December. Toys are distributed through social services and other community contacts to those most in need. 5Shopping Local – Local shops, bars and restaurants are looking forward to sharing their Christmas produce and offers with you. The new lights purchased by Congleton Town Council last year will add extra sparkle and Congleton Partnership and the Town Council has sponsored 100 small trees for local shops to add to the festive feel. The Makers Market will be in town on the 27th November and the 18th December from 10am – 4pm and the retail market every Tuesday and Saturday. 6Tree of Light – Congleton’s Tree of Light, organised by Congleton Rotary, will be switched on at a ceremony in the Community Garden on Saturday 4th December. This is the third year of the tree and the second year of the living tree. Stars which will be added around the tree are on sale at the Town Hall, at Congleton’s funeral directors and various shops priced £5. 26Recently I bought a car I’d coveted for years. It’s nothing flash or expensive but it’s the first convertible I’ve ever owned. It’s fifteen years old and creeps by silently and stealthily compared to more modern models from the same manufacturer. It belonged to my neighbour, John who I’d pestered for a decade. He relented and now I’ve got the car to go with my mid-life crisis!Congleton is genuinely privileged. It nestles in one of the prettiest landscapes in the entire country. Where better to get the roof down and feel the rush of fresh air than here? After some gentle coaxing and the promise of a Sunday roast at her favourite pub my wife agreed to join me for the jaunt. But where were we to go? Head west from Congleton and nothing changes much until you get to Wales. So we decided to head east town towards Bosley and Buxton on a three counties road trip.I’ve driven the A54 many times. With the roof down it felt totally different. Feeling every twist and turn the sweeping curves and sharp bends ensured I kept the speed down. Without a roof and windows cosseting us the magical rolling landscape towards Allgreave with its dry stone walls, coppices and tree-lined ridges was revealed to as never before. We could have been in the lower reaches of Snowdonia or Powys. A small detour took us to the hidden chasm known as Lud’s Church. It’s cosily damp and gloomy. Eeyore would love it. Where the average speed check zone starts the trees stop. After that it’s uncompromising and unforgiving moorland. Desolate and brooding with all the menace it could muster on an autumn day. It’s my favourite type of landscape. If I didn’t know better the border between Cheshire and Derbyshire could easily be mistaken for the very northern reaches of Scotland. From Buxton we headed towards Leek and another of my favourite places, The Roaches. I’ve spent weeks traipsing around these gritstone outcrops and the surrounding tortured and folded hills. It reminds me of Colorado - but with better beer.Straying off the A53 and across a wide, shallow valley where once there were wallabies the sense of isolation was palpable. And then, joy of joys, an ice cream van dispensing 99’s with a spectacular view of Tittesworth reservoir. A vista no less beautiful than the jewel of the Lake District and Windermere itself.Time to head home and we find ourselves in Swythamley. The village descends in to the depths of the Dane Valley. At the very bottom there’s the cutest cottage that looks like it was once the local mill. Climbing back out of the valley on slippery roads I’d advise drivers to take it easy on the hairpin bend otherwise you might be trapped forever. Look out for the stone bust displayed in the gable end of a barn as you ascend. I wonder who it commemorates?Earlier, I mentioned a three-counties road trip. Turns out it could have been a three countries tour of Great Britain. How fortunate we are to have this all this on our doorstep.Mark EdwardsonMan about town... Mid--life crisis!

28Arthritis is a term to describe pain, swelling and stiffness in joints. There are many types of arthritic conditions which affect people of all ages, even children and teenagers.Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common arthritis. It mainly affects people over 45, although it is seen in much younger people too, particularly those with a prior joint injury. It commonly affects the hips, knees, hands and feet.Causes of OA:• Previous joint or overuse injury such as a fracture, cartilage or ligament tear• Obesity – excess weight increases joint strain and fat cells promote inflammation• Musculoskeletal abnormalities – malalignment of bone or joints can accelerate OA• Weak muscles – strong muscles support joint alignment• Age & sex – OA is more common in older people and women• Genetics and environmentYour feet as health clues:Do your shoes fit comfortably? Arthritis can cause feet and toes to subtly shift in position and shape. If your usual shoes become uncomfortable, you feel pressure in new places or you’re struggling to get shoes to fit comfortably, it could be a sign of arthritis.Callus (hard skin) on the inside of your big toe? One of the 1st joints to show signs of arthritis is the big toe. Arthritis limits the normal range of motion causing pain and stiffness. The term for this common arthritic condition is ‘hallux limitus’.Are your toes straight? Hammer/clawed toes are toes that are permanently bent. This is due to muscle imbalances putting pressure on the joint and can be a sign of arthritis. Common in people with bunions, poor fitting shoes or high arched feet.Self-care tips for OA:Exercise: If you have OA, it is very important to keep active. Exercise helps to strengthen the muscles and tendons that support the joint and nourishes the joint cartilage.Weight management: If you’re overweight, losing weight will improve your condition by reducing the strain to the joints in your feet and ankles.Footwear: Shoe shape should accommodate your foot shape, with enough room for the toes to wiggle and spread when walking. Have your shoes professionally fitted if possible, as feet can change size over time. Shop for shoes in the afternoon when feet are bigger. Shoes with a stiff or rocker sole can help reduce pain from Hallux rigidus and bunions. It is very easy for arthritic foot pain to get you down, but speaking to experts and seeking advice on excercise tips and specialist footwear can help with the day to day management of the condition. For temporary relief from aches and pains there are also heat treatments for leg and feet with hot stones and paraffin wax. Ayres HealthA spotlight on arthritis...

30Christmas contact – when is the best time to sort out Christmas contact? Many estranged parents are on tenterhooks as they don’t know when is the best time to raise the topic of Christmas contact arrangements. Raise the issue too early and you can be accused of being controlling and leave it too late and you will be told that plans have already been made and can’t be changed to accommodate your wish to see your children over Christmas. What is the solution? Many separated or divorced parents see Christmas gifts come out for sale in some shops in August or September and start to raise the thorny topic of Christmas then. For other parents the week before the big day is the first discussion over the arrangements. There is probably a middle ground of when it is best to sort out Christmas contact. Some separated or divorced families they think that they have Christmas sussed as they alternate which parent has the children at Christmas and at New Year and so there should never be any question about the Christmas contact. However, even these arrangements can come unstuck when a former husband or wife meets a new partner and there are step-children and larger extended families to consider. This year everyone wants to celebrate Christmas after the 2020 muted celebrations. However, there is trepidation over whether COVID-19 related issues will scupper holiday plans or whether separated or divorced parents will want to change the status quo of Christmas contact arrangements because they haven’t seen their own extended family for so long and view Christmas as the ideal time to get together. The best way to sort out Christmas contact is to have an early discussion before the other parent makes assumptions or fixed plans about their Christmas with the children. It is also good to be flexible, particularly in light of the impact of COVID-19. So, if it is ‘your year for Christmas with the children’ but all your family live locally it may be the right thing to do to let the children spend Christmas with their other parent if their family lives overseas or on the other side of the UK.If you can’t reach agreement over Christmas contact then there is family mediation to help you reach a compromise or , if that doesn’t work, an application for a child arrangement order (an order for contact). These orders can take a bit of time to organise so if you know that your ex is going to be unreasonable over Christmas contact it is best to plan ahead so you get your Christmas contact order in time for Christmas.Evolve Family LawLet’s talk legal...

32In September 2021, it was announced by the government that the plan for social care would be reformed ‘for once and for all’. This plan is said to address the nations fear of losing everything to pay for the cost of their care. This announcement has got many more people talking about their circumstances and what the cost of care may mean for them and their family. These conversations are important for us all to have and Gary from Sanctuary Tax and Trust has given us his insights in to the changes the bill may bring and what they may mean for you.The Government are placing a cap on the maximum anyone will have to pay for care. While this cap will be set at £86,000, the first point to consider is that the cap only covers the cost of the care itself. It doesn’t cover any accommodation costs. It’s difficult to give an exact example as care bills rarely (if ever) show the breakdown of how they are made up. But typically, we can say that care fees are around £1,000 per week and cover both a person’s care and accommodation. The care part would basically be the cost of the carer and the use of equipment required. The accommodation part is made up of the apartment the person is living in, electricity, gas, water, council tax, food and whatever profit the care home owner wishes to make. Here is an example to help illustrate the costs. As a guide, let’s say:The care cost is £500 per week, meaningThe accommodation cost is also £500 per week. (In reality, I think the accommodation part would be higher than the care portion of the bill as carers could be earning as little as £9 an hour.)Care would only become free once the £86,000 cap had been reached in care costs. In this example, paying £500 per week would take 172 weeks or 3 years 3 months to reach the £86k cap. However, by this point, £500 per week would also have been paid for accommodation. This gives a total outlay of £172,000.True Costs:I don’t have many clients who could raise £172,000 out of their assets without having to sell their homes, but also consider: The cap is per person. If both people within a married couple went into care, the figure would double to £344,000. Accommodation costs would continue to be incurred (and need paying) at the rate of £500 per week, per person. With all these changes it pays to plan early and seek advice. 34 www.clonter.org Anthony Berg, Hearing Aid Audiologist, answers some of the most frequent asked questions about Hearing Aids. What are invisible aids I see advertised? These are very small hearing aids that sit quite deeply in the ear canal and as such cannot be seen once in the ear. Legally they can be termed ‘Invisible In The Ear’ hearing aids. They are cosmetically the most discreet aids but are not for everybody. What are ‘wireless’ hearing aids? The newest ranges of hearing aids are now mostly ‘wireless’. This means they can be programmed whilst in the ear and can be operated via remote control if desired. The wearer can turn the volume up or down via a small remote control no bigger than a mobile phone. Wireless hearing aids can also communicate with each other to better simulate the spatial and temporal qualities of normal hearing. What after care do hearing aids need as I know someone who bought hearing aids abroad and are now finding it difficult to get them fine tuned in U.K.?Yes, after care is essential with hearing aids. Most reputable retailers will offer free after care with hearing aids to include fine tuning. Hearing acuity changes with time and therefore hearing aids need adjusting over time. It’s always best in my opinion to purchase hearing aids from a local source. What are battery free hearing aids? There are now some ‘re-chargeable’ hearing aids that do not take batteries, recharging units are easy to use and free of charge with some models.Congleton Hearing CentreYour hearing questions...

How to keep your business going in a Work Where You Want To (WWYWT) Society... As we are all finding our way in this new ‘normal’ with many of us still hybrid working - how can you ensure that you keep your customers? Your customers might not be located where they were before COVID-19 – so how do you reconnect? Whilst your customers or clients have been working from home (WFH) they have been engaging more and more with your competition because they have been a sitting target. There has been an increase in digital marketing and advertising of 32% during the last 12 months. Anytime, anywhere ‘theft’ of customers has never been more easy. And, given that overall marketing spend is expected to grow by 14% in 2021, you definitely want to keep up with your competition. Are we doing anything different since the pandemic? Although more people are sourcing news from a tablet or mobile app and 84% of us are using social channels as a main source of news and information. the pandemic accelerated a greater focus on in-home channels versus out-of-home. This means there is still a huge shift towards media that is delivered to the home - which includes local titles like Beartown Voice. So, when we cannot have face to face contact with customer then ‘In MEDIA we trust’ - brands advertise to raise awareness, increase sales and build loyalty, using media appropriate to each target customer. In general, small and medium-sized enterprises are more dependent on channels that drive customer engagement. IAB data shows that 73% of advertisers have modified or developed new assets since the start of the pandemic. Of these, over half (53%) are increasing messaging that emphasises the mission of the company to attract customer loyalty. You buy from people you know and trust!3 things to do now to make your clients feel valued - and keep them!1. Thank them... Because they remained loyal during the last 18 months, you are now able to get back to business - email, text, or surprise them with a gift2. Reassure them... Get busy on your media channels - tell them you are back and tell them what you are doing, talk about your safety protocols and any changes instore or at your office3. Engage them... Now is the perfect time to adapt your brand profile and marketing approach to drive customer engagement. Appear in those media outlets driving the change in your sector. Be where they are and get personal – people engage with people more than companies.Sara Wheater, Account DirectorCalvin MarketingBusiness ideas...36

40HerSpace is a new business for local women designed to boost psychological wellbeing by giving them the chance to spend some time on themselves and to introduce them to other women in the area. Set up in July by 32 year old local mum of three, Charlotte Bell, she found it difficult to make new friends in the area when she moved to Congleton in 2016. I spoke to Charlotte to find out more about what was behind the idea of HerSpace. I wanted a chance to get out and meet new people and to try new things, but found a lot of groups were attended by pre-established friendship groups. Since then I have been fortunate to make new friends through having my children, but I really wanted to meet people who knew me as ‘Charlotte’ and not ‘mum’ and to try out new things away from soft-play centres! Lockdown has left many people feeling isolated, suffering with their mental health and I wanted to do something which could help others in similar circumstances. We arrange monthly events all attended by local women aged 21-65 who don’t know each other. We currently have 95 members who have joined for various reasons. Some are new to the area and looking to make new friends, others are entering retirement and are hoping to find new hobbies, some are mums looking to grab some ‘me-time’ away from their children, whilst others are looking to aid their mental health.Activities are varied but so far have included canoeing, a calligraphy workshop, chocolate fondue night, rounders, pub quizzes, walks, crazy golf and an African drumming workshop to name a few. The main aim is to just have some fun and try something new. There is also an optional monthly connect and reflect session focused on the practice of mindfulness and meditation led by local practitioner Rachel Bilski.Members can also choose to have a surprise treat delivered to their door designed to brighten up their day, sourced from a local business. New members are joining all the time from areas surrounding Congleton, Sandbach and Macclesfield and the response has been overwhelming.Members pay a monthly £5 membership fee and get access to 4-5 events each month at group-rate costs, a book club and part is a donation to a local mental health charity. The fee ensures it remains an intimate community whereby the same ladies are attending events each month. This really helps friendships grow. HerSpace are keen to support local business, with all workshops and events taking place locally. If this sounds like something you would be interested in joining or you know of someone who might benefit from membership please visit their website www.herspaces.co.uk, find them on Facebook or contact Charlotte at info@herspaces.co.uk for more information.KatyBeartown meets...
